Default Nice trick for improving relations with the Papacy

This works best when on Crusade. If one is called, join up as that alone will probably help your standing with the Pope, but this is where it's at. Along the way to whatever the target city is, sack or exterminate some unfortunate enemy settlement, tear down every building for profit, and then tribute the city to the Papacy as a gift. The result? Instant maximum standing with the Pope. Sure, it will probably rebel on the next turn but that's not your problem anymore!

    Thank you.
Also, no settlement rebels (they just riot) in one turn, so tax the hell out of the citizens for one turn before handing over the city to the Pope unless another foreign power is about to stroll on in to the ungarrisoned city as soon you end your turn.

Well a nice trick to increase diplomacy with any nation (Preferably ally) is to spam gift them map information, if they reject you will get + rep anyway and you will be able to gift them map information again the same turn, because gifts are always seen as a good thing even if the other faction rejects it. You can do this over and over again untill they except - mostly after 3-4 turns. When they accept you might have gained +2 stance level, thus a more reliable ally. And about the gift itself, map information is pretty useless imo.

I've discovered that too. It can be used not only for improving relation with papacy, but any factions in general whom you want to improve relation but don't really want to benefit the other and won't cost you dearly.

Also, it's a great way to make your opponent suffer - occupy a city (big city in middle-east preferrably) give it to your opponent. the AI will definitely try to improve the city by constructing new buildings, but guess what, the upset rate of the settlement is bound to rebel a few turns after.

Or better yet, it might start a war that you can take advantage of if another AI faction attacks the vulnerable city once you've gifted it to someone.

Hey nice tip! I'm playing as Denmark now, maybe I'll try some Viking-style robbing on some settlements, just for fun!

The only problem with this is that in the original vanilla 1.0 (1.1 seems to do this anyway sometimes) once you give the Papal States some land, they go beserk. Usually they're content and happy wandering around Rome and beating up on rebels, but once they get a hold of some random city, they go nuts. They start taking more rebel settlements and even start warring on other states.

Strange. Never heard of The Papacy doing that before, but even if that happens, it's not too much of a problem since I'm the Spanish and the only people they'd be attacking are my rivals.

Even more bizarre thing happened in one of my campaigns. After I conquered Jerusalem, Tyre, and Gaza, I gave them all to the Pope. You know what...after several turns, I noticed Rome belonged to Milan all of a sudden and the Papacy still exists in the Holy land. Since I didn't see any war between any faction with the Pope, I guess Pope decided to move all his possession to Jerusalem and left Rome empty...which leads to rebel's taking over of Rome and then it falls into the hand of Milan...quite funny.:hmmm:

Odd, when I give the pope recently conqured lands (did not destroy or sack any buildings, just repaired the stuff and gave it to him) my relationship drops down to abysmal. The only problem I see is the city getting religious unrest and the pope does not like that so they drop the relationship status on me.

Also in my game, the pope killed off milan and conqured all their cities, started a war with hre and the moors, and off crusading in the holy land sieging Jerusalem.

Well I have a very aggresive papacy in my Scotland campaign. They beat the hell out of Milan and landed in Valencia in Spain at the beginning of the game and control Sardinia and Corsica just of the Italian mainland. Im not sure if giving them land would be the best idea, because being at war with the papacy is really a pain because the papacy tries to covince a lot of other factions to crusade against you.

The Papacy as a faction shouldn't be aggressive at all. The only thing they should do is try to recapture any city that was taken from them.
