Thread: Historical Events - Help needed.

Default Historical Events - Help needed.

Since Anno Domini will try to include all the mayor historical events we need some little help from you.

We are developing a good system to include historical events in the campaign, with the limits due to the hardcoded MTW2 engine though, but what can be done with realistic results, it will be done.

So what we ask is some help to collect the most important historical events like invasions, rebellions, and so on which can help us greatly to bring realism into the gameplay.

Just to give you one example of the scope and size of the events we already scripted into the Georgian invasion in Tbilisi in 1221. They were 60.000 georgians who spanked the segiulchids and created a state. Of course they are represented by a stack of 20 rebel units and they siege Tbilisi whoever owns that region (except rebels of course), but it's a nice thing to see anyway.

We can't assure every event you will suggest will be included, most will be impossible to replicate with decent results, other would be discarded because we can't have 1000 of them, but the final result we hope it will better that the usual lobotomized spawning brigands of Vanilla.

Do you think to take some historical events from the first "Medieval Total War"?!

I saw that in M2TW there is less historical events than in MTW

In 1082 the “crisobolo” or "gold note" proclaimed the Venice's supremacy in the Adriatic Sea. So the Venice's submission to Byzantium was finished and the City can be considered a free State.

(Nel 1082, il “crisobolo” o bolla aurea sanciva la supremazia del Dogato veneziano in Adriatico. La soggezione di Venezia a Bisanzio apparteneva al passato e la città poteva considerarsi libera.)

So I think that Venice could start the game like a Byzantine's Vassal and in 1082 it breaks its relationship and Vassallage with the Empire.

    What do you think?!

In 1084 was founded the first Carthusian monastery, the "Grande Chartreuse", in Savoy.

So you can build a monastery in that year in Savoy! Maybe you can also increase the Catholic's percentage in that province.

The Albigensian Crusades and Catharism could be an event perhaps? Have the event where in the south of France, you could increase the spawning of heretics for a set period and then within the space of 20 years it would kick into overdrive and the provinces in the regions you choose could perhaps become rebel held? They might even revolt themselves if the instancy of heresy is high enough. And then have the Pope declare a crusade if you can trigger such events. Not sure how you could script it easily, but even if you just increase the spawning of heresy, the Pope would send the inquisition and you'd end up losing your settlements to rebellion if religious unrest became too great.

I think that you can't put in a event like this because in 1453 (I'm talking about M2TW, not real history) the Byzantine Empire could be the stronger country of the map or the Turks couldn't exist.

maybe for joan of arc you could have a woman model on the campaign map, as opposed to just an ancillary... that would be quite amusing, but i dont know what it would entail. the whole martin luther thing (if possible) should be included, would probably completely muck up european relations - if you are implementing this then would you have only the nations that did go protestant going protestant, or do you think for the ai there should be a % chance and you as the player get to choose? that would mean that its not always britain etc changing...
for england, there is the peasants revolt in 1381 and various others... could probably look some others up if you wanted.
you should probably just play a game of mtw and see all their events!

Let me know if this is too detailed, not detailed enough and what parts you find useful. I would describe this as medium to low level of detail, so there is flexibility in both directions.

Major events in Russian history, Part I: 1078-1185

1078 - Vsevolod I Yaroslavich becomes the Grand Prince (Velikiy Kniaz) of Kievan Rus. Ruled as Velikiy Kniaz until his

    death in 1093.

1084 - Vladimir Monomakh occupies and sacks Minsk.

1088 - Volga Bulgaria occupies Murom

1090 - Plague and famine in Kiev

1091 - The last heretic rebellion in Rostov

1091 - Rebellion in Tmutarakan (Hermonassa) resulting in its separation from Kievan Rus.

1092 - The war with Polovtsy (Cumans, Polovtsian) begins

1093 - Sviatopolk II Iziaslavich becomes Velikiy Kniaz of Kievan Rus. Vladimir Monomakh becomes Kniaz in Chernigov,

his brother Rostislav - in Pereyaslav.

1093.05.20 - The Battle of Stugna River between the princes of Kievan Rus (Sviatopolk II of Kiev, Vladimir Monomakh of

Chernigov, Rostislav of Pereyaslav) and the Polovtsy (8000 troops). Russians are defeated, Sviatopolk and Vladimir retreat

to their cities, Rostislav dies in battle.

1093 - Kniaz Oleg (rebel) and Polovtsy besiege Vladimir Monomakh in Chernigov. Vladimir retreats to Pereyaslav, Oleg

occupies Chernigov and allowes Polovtsy to sack the city as payment for the campaign.

1095 - Princes Sviatopolk and Vladimir launch campaign against Polovtsy, kill two khans (Kitan and Iltar)

1095 - Princes Sviatopolk and Vladimir set out to kick out Oleg (rebel) out of Chernigov, Oleg escapes

1096.07.19 - The Battle of Trubezh River between the princes of Kievan Rus (Sviatopolk II of Kiev and Vladimir

Monomakh of Chernigov) and the Polovtsy (Tugor Khan and his son). Polovtsy were besieging Pereyslav in hopes of an

easy victory. However, soon enough, and quite unexpectedly for the Polovtsian army, the combined forces of the Russian

princes showed up and attacked Tugor Khan's army. The Polovtsian army didn't have a chance to regroup and sustained a

"crushing defeat". Tugor Khan, his son and many of his other generals were killed or captured.

1096 - Kniaz Oleg (rebel) kills Iziaslav (son of Vladimir), occupies Ryazan, Murom, Rostov, Suzdal.

1096 - Mstislav and Viacheslav (sons of Vladimir) defeat Oleg; occupy Murom, Rostov

1096 - Polovtsy (led by Khan Boniak) occupy and sack Kiev.

1103.04.11 - Princes Sviatopolk and Vladimir launch a series of campaigns against Polovtsy. The first major battle was

against khan Urusoba. A "heroic victory" for the Russians. Urusoba and 19(!) other khans die in battle.

1111 - Vladimir Monomakh with the united army of Russian princes (30000 people) crushes Polovtsian army (Sharu Khan). The news of this victory reached "even Rome".

1113 - Velikiy Kniaz Sviatopolk dies in Kiev and that triggers unrest in Kiev. People want Vladimir Monomakh to be the next ruler. His son Mstislav becomes Kniaz in Novgorod.

1120 - Russian princes launch campaign against Volga Bulgaria.

1125 - Vladimir Monomakh dies at the age of 73. His son Mstislav becomes Velikiy Kniaz

    1128 - Mstislav occupies Polotsk.

1128 - Plague and famine in Novgorod, Pskov, Smolensk, Polotsk

1131 - Mstislav occupies and sacks Vilnius (Lithuania)

1132 - Velikiy Kniaz Mstislav dies. The beginning of feudal devision and the fall of Kievan Rus. Yaropolk, son of Vladimir Monomakh, takes the throne in Kiev.

1136 - Kievan Rus is seperated from Novgorod.

1139 - Unrest in Kiev. The throne is captured by Vsevolod II, grandson of Sviatoslav, who deposes the legitimate heir Vyacheslav , son of Vladimir Monomakh. For the next 20 years the throne in Kiev is perpetually contested by numerous contenders.

1147 - Moscow is founded by Yuri Dolgoruki, son of Vladimir Monomakh

    1157 - Rebellion in Kiev (1157-1159)

1169 - Andrei Bogolyubsky, Kniaz of Rostov, occupies and sacks Kiev. His younger brother Gleb takes the Kievan throne. The end of Kievan Rus.

1185 - The infamous Prince Igor attempts to unite Russian princes one last time to fight the Polovtsy. Fails to unite the princes and as a result his army suffers a crushing defeat and Igor himself taken prisoner.

The invitation to the al-Murabitum caliphate to come to Iberia and help defend the muslim kingdoms from the invasion of Spainish and Portuguese forces in 1085.

I am not sure how you would represent this. Maybe al-Murabitum receives the invitation (mission) after the first incursion by either Spain or Portugal into a muslim territory; and then, the rebel muslim states automatically join the al-Murabitum faction as his forces pass their cities or possibly after defeating an invading army.

The Cathare heresy in France was quite important (even a cursade was declared).
In HRE there were some troubles.
Also in Hungary there was a Couman invasion, I'll find you when.

One other thing, the Baltic coast's towns should be a little harder to take since only the Teutoni order allied to the pole and to the dane could conquer them.

Don't forget Martin Luther and his founding of the protestants through his 95 Theses and the resulting peasants war in german lands (1524-25).

    Luther's Bio

Imho its one of the prime religious events that happens in that time. And it parted the ruling houses.

And the Black Death in the 14th century.

Also there is the english reformation.

don't know if you need this cauze I don't know when the game ends!!

Thanks to everybody. We're hoping to put into much of them but the technical limitations of MTW2 are sometimes dramatic (like not being able to give a region to another faction without a huge scripting turnaround).

Still in 0.92b we already put into the invenstiture controversy, the siege of Toledo, the Almoravids in Spain, the Georgians in Tbilisi and other little stuff.

some of the later reformations like Luther's couldn't work because the game ends too early, and it would be WAY too hard to create another actual religion if it's even possible. but i like the idea of the Cathar uprising in France. how about implementing some of the other heretical uprisings in Europe. There's John Wycliffe and the Lollards in England and Jan Hus and the Hussites in Bohemia. these could be represented by an increase in heresey in these regions at the time of the events, which were in the late 14th century.

First Crusade 1095. Pope declares crusade against Jerusalem

Second Crusade 1145–1149. Muslims attack and take Edessa, crusade declared on Edessa.

Third Crusade 1189–1192. Saladin attacks Jerusalem, pope declares crusade against Jerusalem.

Fourth Crusade 1201–1204. The Fourth Crusade was initiated in 1202 by Pope Innocent III, with the intention of invading the Holy Land through Egypt. The Venetians, under Doge Enrico Dandolo, gained control of this crusade and diverted it first to the Christian city of Zara (Zadar), then to Constantinople, where they attempted to place a Byzantine exile on the throne. After a series of misunderstandings and outbreaks of violence, the crusaders sacked the city in 1204. (I dunno how you could do this, maybe call a crusade against Constantinople? :hmmm: )

Fifth Crusade 1217–1221. Pope calls a crusade against Jerusalem but encourages the crusaders to attack Cario.

Sixth Crusade 1228–1229. Emperor Frederick II had repeatedly vowed a crusade but failed to live up to his words, for which he was excommunicated by the Pope in 1228. (excommunicate HRE) He nonetheless set sail from Brindisi, landed in Palestine, and through diplomacy he achieved unexpected success: Jerusalem, Nazareth, and Bethlehem were delivered to the crusaders for a period of ten years. (call crusade against Jerusalem?)

Seventh Crusade 1248–1254. In 1244 a Khwarezmian force summoned by Egypt stormed Jerusalem. The crusaders were drawn into battle at La Forbie in Gaza. The crusader army and its Bedouin mercenaries were outnumbered by Baibars' force of Khwarezmian tribesmen and were completely defeated within forty-eight hours. (maybe spawn a stack of Khwarezmian/Egyptian troops if Jerusalem is in Catholic hands? I dunno if thats possible though) Louis IX of France organized a crusade against Egypt from 1248 to 1254. It was a failure, and Louis spent much of the crusade living at the court of the crusader kingdom in Acre. (crusade called against Jerusalem?)

Eighth Crusade 1270. Organized by Louis IX in 1270, initially to come to the aid of the remnants of the crusader states in Syria. However, the crusade was diverted to Tunis, (crusade called against Tunis? I dunno how well that would work) where Louis spent only two months before dying. The Eighth Crusade is sometimes counted as the Seventh, if the Fifth and Sixth Crusades are counted as a single crusade. The Ninth Crusade is sometimes also counted as part of the Eighth.

Ninth Crusade 1271–1272. The future Edward I of England undertook another expedition in 1271, (maybe call a crusade against Damascus or Edessa since they are in Syria) after having accompanied Louis on the Eighth Crusade. He accomplished very little in Syria and retired the following year after a truce. With the fall of Antioch (1268), Tripoli (1289), and Acre (1291), the last traces of the Christian rule in Syria disappeared.

Alexandrian Crusade 1365. This was a minor seaborne crusade against Muslim Alexandria led by Peter I of Cyprus. More on Crusades.

The Cathar Crusade 1209-1229 Maybe cause a city to rebel, spawn "heretics", and cause the pope to declare a crusade on the settlement.

Teutonic knights attack Lithuania 1291-1410. They also fought the Polish in the 14th century and in 1237 aimed to convert Orthodox Russia to Catholicism. They were defeated by Prince Alexander Nevsky of Novgorod in 1242. Maybe give the HRE lots of troops to fight the Polish/Russians/'Lesser factions' Lithuanians or create an emerging faction. Map of Teutonic holdings. More on Teutonic Order.

Treatises of 1520 - Martin Luther excommunicated. Maybe this could trigger lots of "heretics" throughout most of Europe.

I don't know if you can use all these, especially the later crusades, but I though I'd post it anyways.
