Depends on the CPU architecture he is using... I don't see the point in getting Vista for a 32bit CPU though...

Well 64 bit might have compatability issues with software and games.
Under the patronage of Rhah and brother of eventhorizen.
ram is an issue as well, u need like 4 gigs to take full advantage of the capabilities a 64bit processor can offer
vista64bit wont do anything for u without the programs to use it on a really strong rig

I will have the same decision to be made...sometime around 2008 January. Until then, I'll stay as a happy winXP user, and just watch how this Vista thing starts off and develops this year. I have the pre-vista (RC1) already and so far using it by alternating which one to boot between XP and Vista for the last 2-3 months, it strains too much on my PC and since I past the phrase of being "amazed" by it, I don't find it such a giant step anyway..

It depends on how compatible the 64-bit version will be with 32-bit applications and drivers. Right now, it isn't very compatible and most games and softwares (32-bit) are having compatibility issues with the 64-bit. There is also the question as to when the 64-bit platform will become more mainstream in regards to games and software.
Certainly, if the 64-bit version is fully compatible with 32-bit software, then it's better to buy the 64-bit version just to be safe for the future, should the 64 bit platform become more mainstream.
My suggestion is that you should wait a while, check reviews and such before purchasing Vista.
32, definately. No point in doubling (to 64) in at least a year or so. You'll have huge compatibility issues I'm afraid, just as Shaun said.
