Default when the eagle is lost

i was just wondering what would happen to the eagle if a legion or a first cohort is destroyed?

in RTR, the eagle was taken to an enemy's city which you had to capture to get it back i suppose. i didn't go and retrieve it because i aborted my campaign. i only lost an eagle once.

so i wonder, what would happen in spqr. anyone already had an eagle lost?

Ive lost 4 in my total history. basically I dont recruit the legion until I take the city that it was lost near. Sometimes the senate mission comes up too where I have to take it back.

You have to go get the eagle back and then recruit the legion. If you are playing by house rules the you must still abide by the 20 turn rule so if you lost it in turn 7 and got it back in turn 11, still have to wait 9 turns until you recruit the legion again.

If an Eagle is lost in battle, then the untold hell of the full Roman Army is unleashed upon the poor saps who thought themselves superior of Roman Military might.

And then the Legion is rebuilt, if the Legate survived, he gets to take a trip into pirate infested waters on a leaky raft

In my Army, the Legion comes first, the Legate is there to serve the Legion by commanding it and defending it, not to survive its downfall.

I've only ever really 'lost' one Legion, and the First Cohort survived, you can read about it somewhere on here it was during the Macedonian Campaign, let me find the linkie...

i just fought a battle against the gauls which i lost. i was attacked by 2 stacks of about 4500 gauls with a general. my forces : a general with his legion of about 2200 men. normally i can handle such numbers with a half legion, but this time i fought at the bottom of a hill and my leftflank was overrun and only 250 survived. my general died.

my first cohort was wiped out so i thought i lost an eagle, an ultimate disgrace. but when i returned to the campaign map, the survivors fled to one of my fleets and my first cohort had one guy left unlike my battle results which clearly marked the loss of my first cohort.

on the one hand i was relieved i still had my first cohort but on the other i was curious what would happen because of my lost eagle.

an update : i was withdrawing my dishonoured legion to the motherland and during the trip ( they were on a fleet), my first cohort that had only 1 soldier left, suddenly had 4 soldiers when it arrived in italy. how odd....

I think it automatically restores lost officers/standard bearers.

another update : when i played a last game before my examinations, i was about to take a macedonian settlement with a half legion and a 7 star general (2457 men) when i was attacked by a full stack of macedonians + reinforcements from the town (3941 + 529 men). i won. then another full stack (4197 men) attacked me and i crushed them. a third stack (1894) attacked me and of course, i won again. by this time i had only 993 + my 9 star general left, ready to take the city. but fortuna left me this time and i was finally attacked by a force of 3352 macedonians. i managed to kill 946 men and in the end i had only 215 soldiers left, but this time i really lost my eagle.

i must say, i'm a bit proud of myself because i killed 13.000 macedonions against 2.200 own losses. the sad part being, the loss of a suberb general and an eagle.

and if that wasn't enough, i had a full legion embarked on one of my fleets, ready for action in gaul, which was attacked by 3 gallic fleets (where they suddenly came from, i haven't a clue) and lost this legion too.

the senate has ordened to retreave my eagle in macedon, but there wasn't a message about my other eagle i lost.
