Militia Question

First off, great mod. The pacing is great and the AI's seem to act more sensibly.

But I have a question about one thing that irritates me. Why are the supposed higher level militia units (halberdier and pikes) worse stat wise than the basic spear militia? That seems to make little or no sense. Why should I even upgrade the barracks when the higher level units are worse?

I don't understand this. Is there something I am missing? Thanks.

Besides the visible stats, units also have other properties like mass, endurance, morale, attack bonusses and abilities like spear wall.
Pike militia, for instance, have the spear wall ability, better unit cohesion and a higher mass then spear militia.
