Default Game crashes on battle loading screen

This occurs during the campaign only. I can start and play a custom battle with 10K+ men with my high settings and hardware at around 20 fps with no issues, but I cannot start a battle of 5k men in the campaign without getting the fatal graphics error crash telling me that my graphics are set too high. The only way to not get the error at even a 5k men battle is to change all the settings to the lowest with shader version 1, and even then the battle will start with reinforcement delayed with the low performance message.

This is the steam version and it isn't installed in program files, and it's running in borderless window mode.

    My hardware is:
AMD Ryzen 3 1200 Quad Processor 3.10 Ghz
    8GB Ram
    Geforce GT 1030
    Windows 10 64

Reinforcements delayed is due to not having your config set to unlimited_men_on_battlefield = 1

The graphical error is a memory issue.

any tip to better optimise the game? I have been having this issue as well. Although not in all of the battle, and massive FPS dropped is far more of a problem for me especially when trying to move camera closer to the units clash in city battle. I can live with having to auto combat city battle from time to time but FPS lag make any city battle nearly unplayable.

Unit sizes can have a negative effect, especially on systems with borderline graphics capabilities. I always play with unit size at "Normal" and never get battle crashes. I have all the graphics settings maxed, and although lag can sometimes be an issue, it's only with really large armies on both sides (and even then it's not unacceptable). Goes without saying that you should also close out all other programs so they aren't impinging on memory availability.

    I having pretty decent set up - GF 980ti + i7 + 8 GB ram

I have been having this issue even when setting graphic to high, it's gone with medium and removing all AA though. May be I'll try set it up to high again and just remove AA, hope it can do better
