Anyone planning to see this movie? It's a movie about the battle of Thermopylae. Long story short, Spartans redefined bad assery when 300 Spartans made a last stand against a quarter million Persians, and had the game in the bag until a traitor showed the Persians a hidden flanking route. 7000 greeks fought total, but most retreated after being flanked leaving the Spartans and several hundred volunteers to fight to the death. The results? All the volunteers and Spartans died but took 10,000 Persians down with them. The trailer looks great, not very historically accurate but looks good nonetheless. Yes, it's based off a comic book for a reason.

I guess...except for the fact that there is no more Sparta and there were more than 300 Spartans who fought to the death. And there were less than a million Persions or however many that trailer supposes. And what about Artemesium? Without that, the Spartans would simply have been outflanked by water. What about Salamis and Plataea, the battles that actually won the Persian War?

This is why I don't get Thermopylae-philes. There's too much bull-**** surrounding the event.

Victrix no argument here. There was a series of events that unfolded that made Thermopylae what it was.

I watched the trailer, it looks so ridiculous, and yet, I can't look away.
I'll see it opening night if I get the chance.

Frank Miller took uber privelages (sp?) with mythology and numbers. Nobody is sure how many Persians there were, and there sure as freaking hell weren't any big-ass fat things with swords for arms.

The only thing historically accurate was the fact that there were about 300 Spartans w/ King Leonidas that fought Persians there...

P.S. (This has nothing to do with topic) Where do you peoples get those nifty little banners that have the M2TW factions on them?

Just saw the trailer, looks like it might be pretty fun. It's obviously not a historical movie, so I can't see getting hung up on it being too fake. It actually reminded me a lot of the game God of War.

It was a feat, no doubt, and it can be glorified as it is, but turning-point? No, but meh, still a feat of the human condition.

Hmmm, looks like a cool movie. Although it seemed a bit fantasy, it seems like it will be worth watching. It'll probably be more entertaining than that cheesy movie, "300 Spartans".

One thing that made thermopyle a "sucess" in history it is the fact that people go die there for other purpose than a tactical move in a war. There's value inside such as honor glory , duty for the city but one other reason really important is the prophety wwich told that if a king don't die there , Sparta will be destroy by Perse.
Its really important for his period for 2 reason : religion and most important in continuity with the illiade tradition (wich were close to dictate greek ways of life , making them think that they were "superior" to other people , the only link between this isolatted city ).This is why Spartian are more mediatised than other oldier who fought there.

I disagree in term of military that it was a failure : it inspire the greek army and put persian into difficulty for the second time since the begining of there campaign.
Spartan harsh training impressed all the greek , but also afraid persian soldier. And in the next battle , when they saw more than 7000 Spartiate in the battle don't you think it got an impact?

Also , often when a small military force was attacked by a larger one and resist haroicaly people refered at a battle a la thermopyle

But i agree there is too much ******** around this

For the movie i really enjoyed the gaphism , i usually don't like action movie exept for "epic movie" and i hope it will be a sucess

    Heh...

Itīs funny how Xerxes is depicted as an androgine sado-freak dressed in jewels. Knowing there is no serious intention to be faithful to what really happened, it must be entertaining to see it.

I just hope the average viewer does not believe thatīs what truly happened, and persians were like that. Itīs too much an stereotypical "we good, they bad" scenario, absolutely eurocentric, but still as I said funny to watch.
