The Hafsid Sultanate
الحفصيون [al-Ḥafṣiyūn]
Background:
The Hafsids were the longest lasting of the post-Almohad kingdoms, and the most cosmopolitan. The Hafsid sultans ruled over a diverse empire that saw a thorough admixture of the Arabs and Berbers, and even significant influx from Christian lands at points.
The Hafsid armies are difficult to reconstruct in detail, but they appear to have profited greatly from the fall of Al-Andalus, using large numbers of Andalusian exiles in addition to the military system common among other Maghrebi armies. Hafsid armies were tactically flexible, using a wide array of native soldiers, slaves and mercenaries to dominate the battlefield, and Hafsid commanders could rely on all the tactical apparatus of their native region as well as the choicest warriors of Christian Europe or Turkish Anatolia.
