What exactly causes these and how can I minimize it ? Those are the 2 major factors that usually turn any prospering growing city into a stagnant if not rebellious city.

The most important thing to relieve squalor is to upgrade your settlement walls asap. When the peons get too crowded they become dirty. The next
most important thing to combat squalor is to build the city hall line of buildings. These offer a health bonus.
There are many building types that increase happiness....religeous buildings,
the city hall chain again, the town hall chain, and the inn chain.

Doesnt work to be honest, the buggers are never happy

Well, I'm talking about my capital. I put full focus on pursuing financial and military structures and kinda abandoned the rest. While my economy is pretty robust and I'm drawing in a great deal of cash per turn to pay for my armed forces and keep most cities building up, the capital and several other cities are now abit full of squalor and some decent unrest. There are no spies anywhere close to the capital so how come there is so much unrest ? How do I get rid of that as well as prebuilt squalor ?
What happens when you reach the maximum size of walls/castle for your settlement?
Do the squalor/unrest level continue to rise until they reach 80%/80% ?
(cause no way to limit it at that stage, as you cannot build new buildings anymore...)

unrest are cause by enemy spies, squalor is cap at 80% always, so is distance to capital. if you can over come 160% with your garrison + buildings then you are good to go with a large empire.
When the loyalty gets too low the easiest thing is to move out the army from the city and let it rebel. The turn after you siege the city and when you take it back exterminate the population. It's nearly impossible to keep the biggest cities happy even with full stacks armies inside.
I have many cities at ZERO pop growth and population around 30,000 - 40,000 because I tax at MAXIMUM possible. I build all buidling to keep em happy and I build them before they people get pissy. Try that.
I only have 4-6 free upkeep militia units.
Some cities I tax at maximum but they still grow at 3-4 percent!
Be glad that this isnt anywhere near as bad as ROME Total SQUALOR.![]()
Interesting Note - the distance to capital negative traits dimished when i built government buildings like city hall, and the like.???

I hate the squalor thing, too. Eventually, the only way to get rid of it is by letting the settlement rebel and then exterminate the population in it, as Panzerfaust suggested.
I wish there was a "kill the poor people" button for each settlement...

I have had huge cities. little problem with happiness or squalor as long as there are max gov't buildings, max "happy" buildings, max cathedrals and moderate taxation. works great.![]()
Tuitio Fidei et Obsequium Pauperum
I have a problem:
As Scotland, I conquered the British Islands. I moved on to Caen to exterminate the English. I conquered Bruges and Antwerp to the Rebels. After suffering some stupid pityful attacks from France (no offence to any French reading this), the damned Danish attacked Antwerp (again, no offence) and conquered it. I reconquered it in 2-3 turns. This was in about 1200. I made peace with Denmark and France. Some turns later, I am at about 1350, leaving only one territory to France and buying Navarre and Zaragosa to the Portuguese and Spanish, plus conquering Sardinia and Corsega, Antwerp is falling under constant unrest, although it has the Green Face Icon. I don't understand this. I was infiltraded by two or three spies meanwhile, but is that enough???
Help me, please!

How does one get rid of spies causing unrest?
¡Vosotros no podrán parar la inquisición Española!
What do you mean?
I think you misunderstood me. I said that those two or three spies CAUSED the unrest, probably. I'm not sure...

Hi, i Know this is game is pretty old but i just started playing it.
there are few steps by which you can have Good (not perfect settlement) without doing much or using cheats etc..
Step 1 : DO NOT GARRISON Generals or Heirs or any Commanders who are good in Command Stats ! (They usually don't have much in Management stats in very rare cases some mite have)
Step 2 : Use Generals / Commanders which Good With Piety,Management, Authority(Kings) For Garrison in Cities/Town. (The Sons of these Generals will mostly have the same stats in management so you can use them run more cities/town)
Step 3 : Now for Handling Squalor or Unrest / Insurgents
Squalor : Roughly meaning Unhygienic Conditions due to excess of population, easy way to handle this problem Upgrade walls town hall etc or if your fully upgraded to huge city then keep on recruiting a really cheap unit with less upkeep by setting its rally point somewhere else and then disbanding it(yes you will have to do this you may loose some money but its worth retaking the city and extermination of population which may lead to reduced income and negative traits for generals Devastation to city and so on...
Unrest : there are multiple reason for this Status in settlement it appears due to squalor or lack of religion in settlement (also called as religious unrest)
Insurgents : this is basically means there are spies in your settlement get our own spies and assassins in that settlement and the enemy spies or assassins will caught in a few turns
HAPPY GAMING![]()
You do not lose population by recruiting units in Medieval 2.
Correct. Otherwise castles would be lacking in manpower.
One way of delaying the increase in squalor is to avoid building farm upgrades. They can give you a nice income, but they become a nuisance when you can't max taxation rate in your cities and you will have to invest even more in public order buildings.
