    Default Getting a new computer...

First I'd like to point out that I know nothing about computers. At all.

I have around £915, though I could perhaps bump it up to about £960.

As long as I can play MTWII easily I'm happy.
    So... suggestions?

Do you want to build or buy? I guess buy since you don't know anything about them which is shame because you could build yourself a fantasic rig for that money. A couple of questions,

    1) Do you need a monitor?

    2) Does it need to come with Windows pre installed?

    Fear that won't be easy...
    Good luck.

I built my PC for ~ 900 €, but didn't need a Screen or anything else.

Well I could manage without the monitor (though it would help)

I actually have a bit more than I thought, so I could afford about £1000, maybe a bit more.

OK, I'm thinking about building one - I doubt it can go too badly and I can get help building it anyway.

You can give it to your local PC shop, they will build it to you for a charge. I built my rig for £975, its a beast! Although I didnt need a monitor or windows or even an HDD or DVD drive or a case.

Well, here are some parts to build around.

    CPU - Intel Core 2 Duo E6400. £150
    http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/Produ...oductID=430632

    GPU
    - Asus Radeon X1950XT 256mb £200
    http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/Produ...oductID=509785

    Or
    - LEADTEK nVidia GeForce 7950GT 256mb £160
    http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/Produ...oductID=466117

    Or
    - MSI nVidia GeForce 7900GTO 512mb £225
    http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/Produ...oductID=465758

    Motherboard
    - Asus P5B skt965 £110
    http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/Produ...oductID=518608

Or - any 965 or 975 motherboard if you arent going to OC.

    RAM - 1GB (1x1) Corsair DDR2 667MHz PC5300 £110.
You might want to get two of these, although currently its not needed. If you only want 1GB of RAM, then get 2x1 sticks (2 sticks of 0.5GB) as its faster and will enable dual channel.

PSU - Anything above 500W, and not too cheap either, you want a good brand reliable PSU. £50-£80.
    http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/Produ...Thumbnails=yes

    HDD - 400 Gb Seagate ST3400832AS Barracuda SATA150, 7200 rpm, 8MB Cache, 8 ms £100
    http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/Produ...oductID=170477

Monitor - Take your pick, you want one with a low ms (eg 5ms, the lower the number the better) and a high contrast ratio (eg 800:1, the higher the first number the better)

    http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/Produ...=349&OrderBy=1

DVD Drive - Take your Pick
    http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/Produ...=261&OrderBy=1

So can I get into heaven?

Erm, I wouldnt get the 64bit edition on windows, there are many problems with it and software compatability.

Hi , I`m in much the same position , similar amount to spend or maybe a bit less as I need a new printer/scanner and webcam as well . I`m thinking about this machine - http://www.novatech.co.uk/novatech/p....html?PC-0977T

    Any opinions gratefully received

Just to add I don`t need a monitor as I hope to buy a good one next year . I currently have a Mitsubishi diamond pro 920 bought around 6 yrs ago . Do I need a new OS or can I use my WinXP discs from my current PC ?

32bit versions of XP should have the same upgrade coupon too. The 64bit Vista also suffers from the same driver problems and program incompatibility of 64bit XP.
