It would be nice, certainly, but it is not going to happen. Because of the way that linux distros tend to operate, they would have to include something along the lines of auto-conf to even have a slight chance of getting the bloody thing to work. But for that to work well, you would have to have the source, because doing that with binary is hard. Problem is, I doubt they are going to hand out the source any time soon, so it won't happen.
oh...darn, guess i'll just have to stick with windows then,
thanx for the reply![]()
Linux is a real OS, Windows is just a hobby.
There are :wub:s of binary distros out there. However, more often then not, each distro would have its own changed package for the program to play nice with the distro. So unless if CA wants to include 15 different versions of the binary or so, that is out of the question.
Only if they would want it to be compatible with the distros package manager.
It's not that hard to include a compresses file with an bash script which would simply unpack the file and move the necessary files to any given installation directory.
Well, there are a lot of other fun stuff that you would have to do. The ./configure stuff takes a while for a reason.
You don't need to execute the configure if you are not going to compile anything.
It takes as long as it takes because it tries to make sure you have all the dependancies for the specific program to compile.

But most software for linux is either sent out as source or a distro-dependent package for a long time now. People have been looking for a easy way to package for a long time now. The fact that none of them have ever found it suggest that there are none.
This is a little bit off topic but its worth mentioning. I was selling some game son EBay a few years ago namely Unreal Tournament 2004 I stuck them on bay and they sold like hotcakes.
Once day someone sent me question about Linux, I can't remember the exact wording but they asked me if the game worked on Linux and he asked to check to see if there was a penguin on the back of box, which when I checked there was. I replied to the guy and said told him the game will work Linux, he replied back and told me in the future to make sure I state that the game works on Linux. What a sado, I mean Linux is hardly mainstream, I bet he spends all his time hassling sellers about it.
I play most my Games on Ubuntu, so it is not that hard if you get the right emulator or if your lucky, the game can be installed to a Linux Distro. I can't get Medieval II: Total War to work on it, but i'm trying.
I've actually seen performance boosts from using Ubuntu when playing a game. Ubuntu is a lot less of a drain on the whole computer than say, Windows 98![]()
