It was the winter of 1117AD , when the hordes of the turks came down from the south and east , storming around the great city of Jerusalem and encamping on the plain below. Sultan Muhammed had come at last , bringing two massive armies to reduce the great holy city with another army appearing on the horizon. A message arrived from the Papal forces requesting permission to enter the port of Jerusalem , but messages were sent out , hoping they would get out of the area before the turkish forces closed in around them warning the Papal forces not to come. [lest they arrive and then be destroyed in turn]



Many times , King Baldwin called out for aid , addressing the Pope and other nations, and even the scots had promised aid, but the anglo-norman english monarch was bent on domination and securing their position of the foremost military power on the continent, attacking holy roman provinces which had rebelled, and even threatening Marseilles and areas in the northwestern europe , with the scottish in toe, as they readied for another conflict. Such words then of asking for aid , for the holiest of cities was far from the thoughts of the people of Europe , as the nobles [and their retailers ] prepared for another european war . The miltary might of England , with its apparent authority could've commanded a mighty crusade if it wished to lead the event , but with its eyes bent on other glory or land, it meant that any crusade would not be happening as other noble houses of europe inevitably prepared their own houses for war.



Baldwin sighed again , again armoring himself and was blessed by the bishop of Jerusalem before he set forth to address his people , who began to gather in the city square below the palace , in a panic , wondering what would become of them. Wandering out on his balcony he addressed the people and his own soldiers about the trial they were about to receive.

"We stand here today , at perhaps our finest hour ! .... God often tests his people , to stand firm in their faith and to protect the innocent and we will not be seen to be lacking in either this day! ....Those hordes outside of our gates , are not true men......A armored warrior of God , can slay three ...nay... four ....even ten of those that stand below our walls ..as long as he has God for his shield!"

King Baldwin cleared his throat , the desert sun beating down on him , drying more than his mouth.

"The Pope is aware of our struggle , as is the church, and we cannot do anything else ..but fight and win for our faith! ....and perhaps even die for our faith if that is HIS command! I urge everybody to eat sparingly , and fight hard for home , health and God in these days..... in the full knowledge of the reward you will receive in Heaven. For all that fight here today , will earn there place with other greats in God's own gardens with the angels and the LORD!"



The goldern cross of Christ of the armies of Jerusalem was hammered into position over looking the main gatehouse [inside face] for all to see and inspire , and certainly the men did seem to pickup in their work in preparing defences. Not one of the christians of Jerusalems of the City would give less than one hundred percent of there efforts in help , as most had their own families within the walls , and the knowledge there was no help on the way from the european world...it was all upto them to defeat the hordes of islam at the walls, or die in the attempt ..for their faith meant more to them , than their own lifes [at least the majority].

The warriors of the army of Jerusalem gave a hearty cheer, with some of the cityfolk , but others looked worried. Some scattered to protect processions and loved ones , some to barricade their own homes, knowing the pain , that would visit them , whether soldiers of christ or of islam in the struggle to come. Engineers and construction teams moved around the mighty outer walls of jerusalem preparing devices to saveguard the walls from siegetowers and ladders. Rubble and oil was gather and prepared at strategic points on the wall in readyness for the enemies assault.

None saw King Baldwin who had moved back to his quarters and cursed the Scottish for their withdrawal of there crusade support , for if it had arrived , the City of Jerusalem would'nt have been in such dire straits.

The kingdom of France , stood a little better this winter , with all the crops collected, and the people enjoyed a few weeks of celebration of collecting the food for the winter, knowing theirs days ahead were a little more secure. Storm clouds however grew in the northwest of Europe as the english and scottish alliance prepared for more war , and the news of the Siege of Jerusalem dampened the kings enjoyment for the minor banquet that was being prepared.

It almost seemed as if God had deserted them , and the efforts of the people of europe of freeing the holy city would be all undone within his lifetime , but their was little he could do as a effectively a vassal of the english monarch , whose eyes had moved onto bigger and better prizes . If his militarist genius could've been launched against the saracen's perhaps Jerusalem might have been saved, or even returned , but his eye's were perpetually on other european estates and his own advancement. Many of the French kings churchmen urged him to push the pope to ask for excommunication to be given to the english monarch to threaten the greatest european power into a war , that might benefit Christianity ...instead of weakening it .
