Moors don't have to withstand the mongols. They're islamic. Religion isn't that big a deal for me.
Since I prefer the European battle style I stay on the catholic countries but see it like this;
Downside with being Catholic:
- Stupid Pope
- Excumminicated chance
- Hard to fight neighbours
- Inquisitors
Goodside:
- Crusades are fun
- Good Pope
- Launching Crusades on "Fallen" brothers of the faith
- Use Pope owned regions as buffers towards enemies you dont have the power to face atm
Islam goodside:
- Free to launch Jihads as you pleases
- More freedom(no Pope)
- Cavalry Archers
Downside
- Mongols(unless being the Moors)
- Timurids(unless being the Moors)
- You better enjoy their troops(Cavalry Archers)
Catholic countries use Horse archers too. Hungary and Poland.
The only thing I dislike about Catholics is how the churches convert slower than Orthodox/Islam's.
DreadedCharger summed it up pretty well I think in his pros/cons list. If you like horse archers and the tactics associated with those types of units, you will enjoy the Islamic factions much more. Mongols/Timurids should only be of slight concern to you as they can be stopped fairly easily if you know what you're doing.
The moors aren't attacked by mongols so easy, but they have big distance between their borders.
