    Default Post your Royal Armies!

After a long campaign expanding my Pergamese Kingdom, from Eastern Thrace to the west, the former Bosphoran Kingdom to the north, the Levant to the east and the Egyptian Coast extending slightly into Northern Arabia to the south, I have amassed the funds and the units I wanted to craft my first Royal Attalid Corps. Headed by only the Heir to the Crown, as the King is busy in the mother city herself and we have experienced enough betrayal to grant such a force to just any commander. We have our Hetairoi and Maiotian Cavalry on the right wing and on the left wing the Hippomachoi supported by Nabatean horse archers, both screened by a small contingent of Elephants, having maintained that trade link from India to Antiocheia. Our 8000 deep phalanx flanked on each end by the best Thorakitai we can muster. Screening them we have a foot contingent of Maiotians, the legendary peltasts of Thrace, and a small unit of Promachoi. Covering fire is provided by archers from the former Bosphoran Kingdom along with the ever reliable Cretans. Finally bringing up the rearguard a reserve of Thracian rhomphaia men, Cretan heavy infantry, and our own elite peltasts.

Currently I'm ~50 rounds into a Boii campaign. It's early and right now I have no image of my full royal army because of a fierce war with the Sweboz but it consists of:

    • 1x Eporedoi Donnoi Boion (Boii General's Bodyguard), usually the Boiorix or the Orbios if the king is too old, but it could also be the potential successor if the heir is languorous
    • 2x Londo Epatoi (East Celt Light Cavalery), as cavalery
    • 2x Argoi (Gallic Nobles), as elite infantry
    • 2x Kombaragoues (Boii Retainers), as elite spearman
    • 2x Diuixuiroi (Eastern Celtic Swordsmen), as heavy infantry
    • 3x Gargokladioi (Celtic Swordsmen), as light infantry
    • 5x Uisusparos Kingetoi (Celtic Spearmen), as auxiliary troops
    • 3x Koxsalotoi (Celtic Skirmishers), as skirmishers

Will see how it changes with the next military reform...

I hope to see this Thread Expand.

As Pontus I like to run this I keep the Galatians on the Left and make them charge once the enemy is near by. The hellenes hold the right flank. Cavalry will attack enemy cavalry and chase them off. Also for Immersion sake i like to make my infantry under AI control after they charge and i leave them that way unless my general is nearby. The hellenes however i always keep under control under the RP reason that they are more disciplined. You can also add thracian peltastai or eastern archers for skirmishing. Of course if you are facing the steppe enemy. i change to an entirely different more horse centric army with no infantry.

    2x Galatian Settlers
    1 Galatian Retainer
    1 Galtian cavalry
    2 Celtic infantry eastern swordsmen
    1 agema Phalangitai
    2 hemithorakitai
    2 regional cavalry

Does 2.2 count? This was my Agema after nearly 400 turns, here under new commander (it was traditionally FH) about to take on Romans.
Spoiler Alert, click show to read:

They've been through a lot, as you can see. BTW, won the battle with ~800 casualties.

Solid 1st battle. I did accidentally leave my Maiotian Cavalry out of skirmish mode and my Hippomachoi did not rout when they got caught in an ambush and were cut down but facing the Nabatean horde led by the Prince and King and managing a pretty penny after capturing the King in the chaos of battle. It will only get better as the kid gains more experience in battle. Big test for the 25 year old and he succeeded

Damn so many elites I know its a royal army but damn, too much overkill

Kidding your army is the envy of all hellenes

Not really a royal army, you can call it a Barcid army (a variant from the historical army thread)...Hamilcar Barca on its first conquest in Iberia:

Do Romans have elite armies? I always thought of them as just getting more grizzled, with added auxiliaries based on location.

Do people actually deploy their cavalry and elephants on the wings like that? I always hide them behind my infantry. when I try to put them on the wings (as is historical, and as I would like to do) the enemy just sends infantry at them, which means I have to move the cavalry and pull infantry out of my line to intercept them, otherwise they get behind my infantry.

For cavalry I definitely deploy them on the wings starting out, but I don't keep them there forever. Usually I charge forward with my cavalry to destroy the enemy's cavalry before the actual battle begins, and then retreat behind infantry lines when it gets too dangerous. Once the two lines meet, I then move my cavalry out from behind the lines to flank.

Elephants I'm not very good with, so I usually deploy them behind the lines to make use of their frighten nearby enemy effect and to protect them from javelins as well. Then I try to flank the enemy once the two lines are engaged--but like I said, I suck with elephants. Strangely enough, the AI is fantastic at using elephants(and horse archers) in my experience.

For our time period I believe they would have consular armies, AFAIK.

As some think Gold Chevron units are overkill i say this. The game does not properly upgrade units. In case people are not aware. killing Routing units grants VERY VERY little XP and we all know thats where the majority of kills occur. If the game engine was really realistic. Every battle should give every unit within that army 1 chevron. As this would show the military progressing and learning how to assemble faster for battles and gathering their equipment or being more alert and aware during skirmishes. Sadly the Devs cannot change this as it is hard coded. I personally like to create new armies and add chevrons to them. I mean just think about it this way.Galatian Raiders may be warriors who are not rich/and or poor. But with enough battle experience why would these raiders not turn into battle hardened retainers? Is that not what their goal is? Now this does not apply to all infantry obviously, but for those such as the hoplitai or the thureophoroi, why would they not gain a chevron after a battle against the foes?

I use to really try not to use "cheats" But after coming to the realization that the only way your ever gonna have a gold chevron is with a cavalry unit (due to k ratio) its best to just create the units with chevrons after they gain experience in battles. If you still feel this is cheating after 10 years simply Disband the army if your leader is not some super warrior that is charismatic. or if he has weak authority and nobody respects him, purposely create him units with no experience.

Can anyone Reccomend a Getai Template? i feel like i should be using skirmishers more than anything with the getai forces.

That goes directly against my experience. In all my campaigns, my cavalry gained veterancy very quickly, as a result of killing and capturing the most enemies, sometimes several hundreds in one battle, per cavalry unit. I have no shortage of gold chevroned riders (even hippeis) accompanying my bronze chevroned infantry.

Every battle should give every unit within that army 1 chevron.
Sounds sensible, and in fact that's a general issue I have with veterancy in games as well, not just TW. OTOH, this is ameliorated in TW games by the possibility to train units with basic XP directly from the barracks, via special bonuses.

Well, about elephants. One thing why AI seems to do so good with them is that it doesn't try to keep them alive, as player would, as they're very hard to replace. So it throws them in, and they're devastating against melee troops...until they eventually go down.

The key to utilizing and defending against elephants are their counters. Elephants are very vulnerable to skirmisher cavalry and artillery, to lesser degree to skirmisher infantry and javelins in general, and to archers utilizing fire arrows. If you want to get rid of them, best is to get a bunch of skirmisher cavalry to flank them, or if you pack any artillery units, focus them on elephants using fire ammo. Nothing funnier than making them go amok while close to their own troops. If you want to utilize elephants, get a bunch of cavalry in front of them and clear out the counters first before committing the elephants to battle. And keep them moving.

Our Prince has since become a little warmonger, no doubt due to the power of our Royal Corps. After destroying the Hayastan and annexing Kotais we found a steady source for the wicked axemen that made quite a dent in our elite Thorakitai. Having turned East towards the former tyrants of the Seleukeia he annexed Samosata and Edessa however Noumenios ran into an amazing sight. Horseman covered in scales from helmet to hoof. He had to have them and in the sack of Edessa he found the blueprint to these units who undoubtedly would replace the Lydians in the left wing of his Royal force as soon as he had the men availible. He would need them, the twin cities of Seleukia and Babylon no doubt will not fall easily...

As our former Prince turned King retired from combat to handle more important matters his son took the reigns of the Royal Corps. As the sole offspring of the King, he made extra precautions swapping out the Lydians for Cataphracts. Young Xanithippos also mad one other edit to the phalanx replacing a squad of Thorakitai for a squad of Galatians. The Prince was blessed to grow up without fear of invasion, only knowing of the fearsome celts from his textbooks was in awe of their prowess and having none of the bias or fear of his forefathers offered them a spot in the forces. The Prince also altered the formation, putting the Elephants at the head of the left wing to free up space for our Horse archers to work unimpeded
