Need some strategic tips

Hello. I am pretty new to total war. I have played some rome tw and just bought medieval 2 a couple of days ago. I find this new tw game very much harder than rome. When i played rome i used a tactic that worked allmost every time. I set my infantery in a flat horse shoe formation with archers behind and cavalery hiding far away on right and left flank. It worked very well in rome, but in medieval 2 it dosent work at all. My enemys heavy cavalery punches through my line, and my archers dosent get to fire many shots before the enemys have reached my own troops. Can anyone please give me some tips, or a link to a good strategy guide or something? Im playing with england and the byzantines. thanks

just line up your infantry, archers infront and cavalry on the sides. wait till contact and flank with your cavalry. disable guard mode. with the byzantines you could use a lot of horse archers. but usually I just do the same as with every other faction. all cavalry armies are also devastating if you know how to use them

all i can say is vary your tactics to confuse the ai as much as possible. alot of the time a single battle line marching forward with archers firing and artillery letting rip to can be very effective
