Icon1 TWC Total War Warhammer -II- benchmark thread - last updated: 06.05.2018

    Greetings TWC members!

Continuing the legacy: Here it is: the 5th iteration of TWC exclusive Total War benchmarking thread.

This thread is not a hardware advice thread but will give you a clear idea, which hardware will give you a certain level of playability at the graphical presets in Warhammer II, defined by CA.
With the help of this thread you will get an idea of what you get and what you can expect for your bucks when it comes to hardware and performance in this next Warhammer title.

Reminder: It is not a thread for hardware advice. If you are looking for this I would like to pass you on to more specific thread by HigoChumbo over here.

So why benchmarking games instead just playing them?
Some think benchmarking is no good but for some few those enjoy putting all their eggs (not guts) in one basket or simply showing off other people .
This can be the case but nevertheless this thread should not be considered to be a place for nerds only, having the most potent hardware around, but should be also a place for all others having weaker and more common hardware setups. Also their results are much more important, because they are quite the majority of common of Total War players.

That said: Benchmarking can be fun for everyone regardless the hardware setup you have, to compare your individual performance to others and often enough find improvements.

Here are some benchmark threads that I hosted and many people contributed with passion to provide their results:

Total War Center - Total War benchmark thread anthology:

    Warhammer I

    Attila

    Rome 2 (post #10)

    Shogun 2 (post #5 and #6)

As always I will try to find the easiest way possible for everyone to participate so it shall and hopefully will not fail just because you aren't a computer expert.

Have a look at this thread again in a couple of days for detailed instructions. If you are willing to participate or interested into the results don't forget to subscribe.

Prior to start bothering with the benchmarking process make sure to update your drivers:

The links will redirect you on a german site but the drivers are multilanguage:

    AMD drivers for GPUs:
    models:

    HD 7700 to R9/RX Series,
    HD 7700M to R9 M (Mobility / Notebooks)
    A-Series APUs (CPU integrated GPUs)
    Pro Duo

    https://www.computerbase.de/download...imson-edition/
    Current version: 18.3.4 (26th March 2018)

    models:
    HD 5000 – HD 7600 Series
    HD 5000M/6000M (Mobility)

    https://www.computerbase.de/download...imson-edition/
    Current version: 16.2.1 (1th March 2016)

    AMD CPU / Chipset drivers:
    https://www.computerbase.de/download...ipsatztreiber/
    Current version: 18.10 (12th March 2018)

    Nvidia drivers for GPUs:

    https://www.computerbase.de/download...force-treiber/
    Current version: 391.35 (27th March 2018)

    8 + 9/100 – 300 Series
    8M + 9M/100M – 300M
    https://www.computerbase.de/download...force-treiber/
    Current version: 342.01 (14th December 2016)

Intel drivers for iGPUs (CPU integrated GPUs):
    https://www.computerbase.de/download...grafiktreiber/
    various versions: 4-6th Gen 23.20.16.4982 (30th March 2018)

    Explanations:
2nd Gen - Intel Sandy Bridge CPUs
3rd Gen - Intel Ivy Bridge CPUs
4th Gen - Intel Haswell CPUs
5th Gen - Intel Broadwell CPUs
6th Gen - Intel Skylake CPUs
7th Gen - Kaby Lake CPUs
8th Gen - Coffee Lake / Kaby Lake refresh CPUs

    Intel CPU / Chipset drivers:
    https://www.computerbase.de/download...ipsatztreiber/
    Current version: 10.1.1.42 (20th January 2017)

It is important to update chipset and GPU drivers for optimal performance.

    How to benchmark properly:

    0. Before you begin: Check / Update your drivers (see above)

    1. General rules before benchmarking:
    - only use the given presets, do not alter the settings manually to make the results comparative! Do not use the "optimal settings" for the benchmark either!

    - Warhammer doesn't save any log files - again- for the benchmarking process. If you got a "downgrade message" due to insufficient video memory please do not submit this results as it is not comparable - it has individual downgrades
Instead pick the next lower preset. Only use unlimited video memory if you use an inbuild on die CPU like AMD Axxx CPU, Intel HDxxxx etc.

    - You do not need to run all presets if your machine is not capable enough (3-4 GB VRAM needed for extreme quality or manually maxed out quality).
It would be helpful enough if you can submit at least one preset where no "downgrade massage" message appeared. Refer above.

    - never use unlimited memory options if you have a laptop card or discrete card in your PC.

    - keep your Windows updated, including the so-called "optional" updates, they contain non security related but needed updates, you need to enable them in the Windows Update settings.

    - "in-game" benchmarks are fine, but won't be included in the results table as they aren't entirely reproducible.

    - please note that modern hardware is very much temperature limited. many processors (CPUs) or graphics cards (GPUs) will throttle performance over time. I know this is actually hard to deal with to keep the results objective.

    2. How to obtain, use and submit cpu-z.txt results
    - results without CPU-Z logs won't be included in the original post
    - Download CPU-Z. CPU-Z is free and available here: http://www.cpuid.com/softwares/cpu-z.html
    - Install CPU-Z. It does not contain any adware or malware.
    - To create a cpu-z.txt file open CPU-Z > open the "About" Tab > Save Report (TXT) > Save the file where you like and can find it later.

    - How to enclose the a cpu-z.txt logfile in your post:

There are several options for that:
    a. use a cloud / uploading service like Onedrive etc / In Windows 10 1703 or later press Windows Key + G This toolbar also helps you to make screenshots in DX11 AND DX12, aswell as offer easy direct renaming of files, by clicking on the flyout notification.
    b. use TWC attach file feature
    c. use pastebin.com (no account required)
    d. write me an e-mail with the logfile attached to: twcbenchmarks@chynet.de, don't forget to include your forum name please.

    3. Temporarily needed system changes:

    - set Windows Energy settings to "performance" to avoid a temporary downclocking of your CPU / RAM

    - temporarily disable all unneccerary processes and (system tray) applications, especially webbrowsers like chrome and Antivirus programs like Windows Defender in Windows 8.1 / 10 or Microsoft Security Essentials in Windows 7.
    - in Windows 10 1703 or later > Press Windows Key + G: Enable Game Mode.

    4. Rules how to post your results:

When submitting a benchmark result, please state the following:
    - minimum FPS
    - maximum FPS
    - average FPS (at least)
    - include a cpu-z.txt log, refer above
    - name the preset in use
    - don't forget to include your in-game resolution
    - if you use Windows 10 determine the build number by entering "winver" in the search bar

    5. How to post results (template):
    - NEW style - As technology evolves so there are a lot more "standard resolutions" out there according to Steam stats. It doesn't make much sense ot gather them all but for sure 1080p and 4k should be contained in the testbed if possible. I hope this new format will be far better readable with many results listed.

Default TWC Total War Warhammer -II- benchmark thread - (open)

I made this by myself, I hope they are appreciated:

    [Total War Warhammer II - R7 1700, RX480 - dx11 - Battle - High] https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lpqyZurmeBw

    [Total War Warhammer II - R7 1700, RX480 - dx11 - Campaign] https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cSEONr-gD2k

    [Total War Warhammer II - R7 1700, RX480 - dx12 - Battle - Medium] https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sudj5zdtBQA

    [Total War Warhammer II - R7 1700, RX480 - dx12 - Battle - High] https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ncSCDivg1IY

    [Total War Warhammer II - R7 1700, RX480 - dx12 - Battle - Ultra] https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6RMru3LjY9U

    [Total War Warhammer II - R7 1700, RX480 - dx12 - Campaign] https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FavWfRjJx0Y

I hope this is not seen as self-promoting, I really care nothing about it, just want to see how it should run with this settings, with this hardware on a, nearly, fresh setup:

    [Total War Warhammer II - R7 1700, RX480 - dx11 - Battle - High]

    [Total War Warhammer II - R7 1700, RX480 - dx12 - Campaign]
Spoiler Alert, click show to read:

    • R7 1700 @3.8GHz
    • RX 480 1350/2200
    • 16GB DDR4 3200 CL14
    • Battle/Campaign Benchmark
    • Preset High(with unlimited video memory enabled)
    • DX 11/DX 12

    Some thoughts:
During both benchmarks and normal playing, I saw that the game really well utilised 4-5 cores(and so 8-10 threads) struggling to use 6 cores(and 12 threads)
    Overall performances are not bad.
Will do more bench/test to compare with W1 too.

DX12 is, overall, noticeable present, but not in the way I thought it would have been(but I'm the only one who hoped them to rebuild from the ground the engine with dx12 or, even better, Vulkan)

    edit: some grammar/format/spell checking mostly;
    edit: added the photo for only the averages;
    edit: added new benchmarks;

Thanks a lot! would you mind me opening another benchmark thread for WH2? Your "review" of the benchmark looks very promising to me to invest work again into this, as the benchmarks looks very good and now has even 2 measurement cycles.
    What do you think?

Hi, alQamar, I have really no problem with this request, I will update it with a written part asap, these benches were made just as quick as possible with just a quick set-up ^^

There's really a lot to talk about it

ok so with your permission I would post a fork of my old WH 1 benchmark thread with all the instructions etc and your results could be merged into this as one of the first? Would that be ok with you?

if you like the thread is now open for posting. if you have any questions, do not hesistate. IF you have the time I would be pleased if you can post your cpu-z.log and perhaps test some other presets than high.

Alessandro I am very sure that I will be able to include your results tomorrow morning. Is there anything new you have collected? I wonder why there is no response to this topic yet. Isn't Warhammer II already out

Yes it has been out for a while, I just think people are not really interested in this(and I see no reason for it), however I've made no relevant test, to be honest, just checked the gains from improving a bit frequency on the CPU or Core Clock/Memory Clock on the GPU, but it is something not related to the game itself.
To be honest, it still sucks that this (kind of) game does not use more than 5 cores just because, however, 6 cores have become a thing today(just thinking about the Ryzen 5 lineup and the i5 and i7 8xxx lineup), I would love to see a full implementation of Vulkan rather than dx12(this would have so many gains), but it is something we will not see(the next total war saga will be based on Attila's one, so it could be far worse).

In conclusion, nothing really to add to what we have seen so far

Well I thought that the old benchmark in WH1 was pretty limited as it does not reflect a real game situation. The Shogun 2 ones is still one of the best with seperated CPU and GPU loads.
I would not have thinked that even the techies at TWC would abstain from doing benchmarks, if the average John Doe does.
