Windsor Castle, Berkshire
Windsor Castle, like Wallingford farther up the Thames, is a royal castle straddling the river. A motte and bailey built by the conqueror, it became a residence first in the reign of his fourth son, Henry Beauclerc. Edward of Windsor, Edward II's first son by Queen Isabella and his heir, was born here on 13th of November, 1312.
