Bristol Castle, Somerset
Bristol Castle overlooks the port of the eponymous town and has served as a bastion and prison for many years. Originally a vassal's castle, the fortress became highly embroiled in the anarchy of the 1100's and was finally confiscated to the crown for the final time during the reign of Henry II when his sons rebelled against him. Now it serves as an alternate place of holding and imprisonment, and perhaps, sometimes, a royal residence.
