Caernarfon Castle, Principality of Wales
Caernarfon Castles is the seat of the royal fief in Wales, the principality. A castle had been here since the 12th century, but when Edward Longshanks conquered the region, he began a stone fortress here in 1293. In 1284, Edward of Caernarfon, who would come to be Longshanks' eldest and only surviving son from his marriage to Eleanor of Castile, was born here, though he never visited the castle again throughout his entire youth. He was invested as Prince of Wales in 1301, and since then has been the holder of the large domain spanning from northwestern Powys up to and all over the island of Anglesea.
