"The White Tower" was originally built by William the Conqueror, using the southeastern corner of the city of as a fortress with which to control the kingdom he seized. Over time it has evolved, becoming an entity of its own; eventually, by the end of the reign of Edward I Longshanks in the 1300's, it had cut itself off from London's old roman walls, dug new moats, and developed two layers of curtain walls.

It has also evolved into a multi functional building; not only is it still a royal residence, but it is also used to detain important prisoners of noble blood. Currently, it is also where the royal mint and treasury is housed. The affairs of the Tower of London are managed by the Constable of the Tower, who is appointed by the King's decree.
