The manor of Westminster, owned by the monks of the abbey founded by St Edward the Confessor, straddles Thorney Island, an small islet southwest of London along the Thames. Upon these grounds also sits the royal hall, the seat of kings going back to the the saint himself. As such it is also the nominal house of justice and of the parliament, though in fact these follow the king wherever he goes. Westminster is the palace and resting place of kings, while the Tower, to the northeast in the city, is the fortress of kings.
