Alnwich castle: Originally built in 1096 by Yves de Vescy, Alnwick Castle came into Percy possession in 1309 and has served as their residence ever since. It is a large and strong castle, which has only been taken by storm once in 1136 by the Scottish (technically it also fell to English royal forces in 1403, but its defenders surrendered instead of facing a bombardment & assault then). It's protected by the River Aln to the north, its baileys are divided by tall stone walls dotted with towers and it also has one of the first non-square-shaped keeps in all of England, where the defenders can shelter if the outer walls are lost. +4 Siege rolls, -4 Raid rolls, and the castle's central keep is strong enough that a defender who loses its outer walls can hold out there for half a year more (3.5 days).

The newly made Lord Clifford arrived to Alnwick Castle, having managed to escape the Black Douglas' cruel hunt for any English stragglers, only to discover his father had been killed in battle.

After several weeks of setting his affairs in order, Roger de Clifford sought out his friends and allies.

Lord Clifford would be greeted by one of the middle brothers of the late Baron's brothers, Geoffrey de Percy, who had been managing the affairs of Alnwick and the Percy lands, given the minority of his brother's successor. Of this within Alnwick, Geoffrey and Walter were present. William, the eldest remaining brother, had headed off to Spoffroth and Topcliffe castles, ensuring their affairs were managed. The youngest brother, Alan, had gone south to their estate at Petworth in Sussex.

Lord Roger was shown into Alnwick where Geoffrey was able to speak with him.

My Lord Roger, it is good to see old friends in the North again... we were worried about what remained of our fellow nobles in the Marches after Bannockburn. How is your family? I have heard of your father's death and offer my condolences.

Ooc: I've just realised Roger is 14, so I'll be using the late Baron 's brother, Simon. Lol.

"Sir Geoffrey,' 'tis an ill way this has gone for England. The North will be left exposed, and poorly defended as the King licks his wounds and Lancaster focuses on forcing him to uphold the ordinances.

We Bordermen must stand strong and together in these troubled times. We must have a faction of our own, that the king will have to listen to our troubles and demands, and uphold them, regardless of the Ordinances. "

If the King refused to follow the Ordinances, then who's to say he will listen to a faction of Border Lords?

The rebellion of his late brother was still fresh in the minds of England when Baron Percy, along with Clifford, Surrey and Pembroke, rebelled against the King over the issue of Gaveston. When his death came, the King, in his grief, lashed out at the Percys, imprisoning Henry de Percy for a full year before being pardoned and his lands returned to him.

He led our soldiers like pigs to the slaughterhouse... and its only emboldened the Scottish. However, it may be still worth a try to form some sort of group of Northern lords. We may certainly have the aid of Lord Lancaster, but there are the still the Nevilles, Lord Richmond, de Umfravilles and the Bishop of Durham we will need to approach.

"The King refused to follow the Ordinances because he could, he no longer stands in such a stalwart position."

It was an interesting situation, with the King's might broken and Lancaster attempting to fill the power divide. de Clifford's face twisted a little.

"I do not, honestly, believe we should consult the Lord Lancaster. He would attempt to seize the reins and use us for his own means. We must be a league of equals, not the pawns of a powerful magnate."

He found himself nodding. "I will consult Lord Neville and the Umfravilles, if you would approach Durham and Richmond. It would also pay to visit both Fauconberg and Mowbray, for they may be limited in power but their banners would only add to our alliance."

But to not approach Lord Lancaster would be an insult to his person, Sir Simon. He is a very powerful man and, with him as our neighbor, it would be wiser to be on good terms with him.

Geoffrey wasn't entirely sure about not including Lord Lancaster. The man had power, visible power through his vast domains that dotted all across England. He was especially strong in the North. To risk relations with Lord Lancaster would only be a detriment to their alliance of Northern and Border Lords. Even together, they would barely be able to match the power and connections at the fingers of the Lord Lancaster.

Besides, Sir Simon, he is a descendant of Edmund Crouchback, uncle of Edward the First. A royal descendant would be a boon to our alliance and add legitimacy to our voice.

"And he will play his games of power through us the moment he sits at our table. King Edward is not his father, but he is the King. Is it wise to include a rival of the Crown from our inception? Edward looking on us with suspicion would only prove a detriment. "

Simon sighed, unsure on the matter.

"Lets us assemble our fellow barons first, and then put the issue before them. If they agree we should approach him, we shall. If not, then we will not. Is this agreeable?"
