Lewes Castle, The Seat of House Warenne

Lewes Castle is the ancestral seat of the Warenne dynasty. It was built in 1069 by the first earl of Warenne William. The keep is build on the highest point in Lewes a large chalk mound. The Motte in Bailey was originally wood, but later was converted to Stone. It also has the unusual distinction of having two Mottes rather than one.

He succeeded his grandfather as the Earl of Warenne when he was 19 years old. In 1306 Warenne married the king’s niece Joan of Bar, but the marriage was unhappy. Joan currently lives with the King and Warenne is living with Maud de Nerford his mistress and two sons. He was the guardian of the King of Scotland Edward Balliol. Warenne played a key role in Gaveston’s 1308 banishment and helped arrest him when he returned to England. However, he disagreed with the decision to execute Gaveston, and that pushed him back towards the king.
