Provided you still have the manual or cd code required for installing the game, you can use it to redeem a steam copy of the game.

Wow, for years I wanted to buy the steam version by fear of losing my DVD, and I didn't know I could have the steam version "for free".
Thanks a lot (even if I'm not the one who started the thread)

You're welcome. IIRC this should be the correct way to do it. https://support.steampowered.com/kb_...7480-wusf-3601

I'm not sure why and since when this has been an option, but I think it might be because the original way of playing multiplayer with the cd version of the game no longer works; this way those who bought the game way back can still have access to multiplayer via the steam servers.

Indeed, I remember having troubles playing MP with steam-version and having to use Hamachi etc. I wish I knew at that time !

Actually though, my main concern was that most links to 1.05 patch working with my version of the game were almost all gone. Another problem solved

If you own the original game there is no reason you can't just use a no cd patch. It's not legal to distribute it, but it's fine for personal use.
Also lots of things that are legal are just unfair and terrible, use common sense, you aren't hurting anyone by improving your gameplay experience.
