Dear Lady Stanley,
It regrets me to write to thee, because it is with heavy hart I must inform thee of thy Husbands death.
Your husband was taken prisoner by the Irish clan of Maccarthy. He had accomplished some initial victories against the Irish clan before being attacked, defeated and captured.
The clan informed me of his capture and demanded a ransom of 200 English Pounds. These demands were met and Sir Stanley was released. On our way back to Dublin, unknown Irishmen attacked our column in which Sir Stanley was mortally struck and died.
Most of his attackers were killed in the resulting skirmish and were made an example as punishment.
Signed, Waxed and sealed.
John Talbot, The Lord Lieutenant of Ireland, Third Earl of Shrewsbury, KG, etc etc.
