Default Vista activity- what is it doing?

I have been running Vista RC1 time to time and the past few days almost exclusively just Vista.

The only thing I'm curious about is , what the HELL is it doing with my hard drive?

I can hear my hard drive constantly chirping, just like when i virus program is doing a scan.

I also recently did a defrag, so my hard drive is in good shape.

Now, I checked the task manager and i don't see anything chewing on my hard drive and yet, there is a giant activity going on in the background, sometimes when I want to access windows media player I get a "not enough memory, close some programs and try again" message, even though I got nothing else running and I got 1.5GB of memory installed.

Now, if 1.5 GB is not enough for Vista, then thank youverymuch, vista is the biggest resource hog OS I have ever seen I don't want it.

    So what is it doing?
Because I get no messages of anything running, and it brings down my system a lot.

Hmm doesnt it make itself busy by creating a huge 'index' file when your computer is idle? Im sure its supposed to do that to make its file searching faster - but to be honest last time i tried Vista the search feature never worked as it should.

Vista constantly defrag your hard drive the moment you turn on your computer, and like what Spiff said it's also constantly indexing your files and loading them into the memory for quick search.

I wouldn't worry too much if it's not slowing down your computer.

The final version should be much more optomized and much less resources intensive.

Man, I checked on what services running. It's crazy, I have like 30 or more things running at once, shut down a bunch of them already and i can feel some speed boost already. I'm back in winXP now, because many things and many games still don't work with vistaRC1.
