    Default Causing Trouble

Thomas Holland, son of Exeter, had swiftly departed back to the West Country upon news of the King's death to raise forces on his father's behalf. Naturally, one would assume that Henry Holland would use brute strength to make a play for the regency... But this was not the case. Holland had, since the untimely death of the Earl of Kent, been eyeing up the wealthy, untended estates that Fauconberg's grandson held in Somerset, right next door to Holland's own base of power in Devon and Dorset. The snake of England no longer had a head. With the monarchy currently toothless, Exeter now could make his move. So, Sir Thomas led three hundred and fifty Devonshire men, all wearing some form of badge depicting the White Hart, into Welling, Somerset, where a cluster of such manors were located.

Exeter's men would loot the manors for all that they were worth, and occupy them, of course. There would be lengthy lawsuits to evict them, but this would take time... Time for Holland to simply soak up whatever funds were available in this prosperous part of Kent's demesne. So, firstly, the armed host approached these manors, with a simple proposition: surrender to Exeter's men and live, or choose to die at the tip of a blade.

The garrisons of Kent's manors in Somerset - Yeovil, Chard, Taunton and Welling - began to prepare themselves for battle, even after the ultimatum had been delivered.

Surrender roll: 5/20 for each (15-20 is success)
    +2 for being outnumbered

    Rolled 5, 3, 10 and 1 - none of the garrisons surrender.

Total army of the garrison troops: 40 men

    24 Yeomen Archers
    16 Yeomen Footmen

Sir Thomas simply ordered his forces forward; the enemy was so outnumbered that Holland's men would merely stand at a distance and allow the longbowmen to do their work. Once their ranks had been thinned, Thomas himself would lead in the Men-At-Arms to clear up the mess.

Holland's men made quick work of the men opposing them - the manors were not made to stand against such a difference in strength. The garrison simply disintegrated, those who survived the onslaught fleeing if not run down by the cavalry. The doors were soon broken down and the riches were now in Holland's possession.

Perception roll: 16 - the survivors that escape are able to make out that the attackers are Devonshire men with badges depicting the White Hart. Some even recognize that a son of a major noble family is leading them, though reports vary on which family.

Raid roll: 14 - during the chaos of the looting of the manors, 14% of Holland's force disappear, likely deserting with their loot.

    Loot roll: Welling - Prosperous Income (£350). Rolled a 2, so you gain 20% of £350 directly = £70.

Also, you will gain 50% of the income of the region for every year you occupy it.

"Find those that deserted us and hang them." Snarled Exeter's second son, having lifted his visor to observe the aftermath. They had lost forty nine - forty nine! men to desertion or death, which was far too great a number for his liking. A small garrison of ten yeomen archers and footmen would hold the central manor house, whilst the rest, accompanying Thomas to Taunton, would continue their path of pillage by taking whatever wasn't nailed down to the floor.

With the attack on Welling already spreading across Somerset, Holland's army would not be able to do any surprise attacks. However, the overwhelming force was simply too much and the manor quickly falls.

Raid roll: 2 - only six men disappear this time, most of them killed during the fighting with the garrison.

Loot roll: Taunton - Prosperous Income (£350). Rolled a 10, so you gain 100% of the estate income, £350, directly.

You will gain 50% of the estate income per year for as long as you hold it.

Once again leaving a paltry garrison, Holland's men move onto Chard.

Once again, the Chard manors are quickly overrun by Holland's forces. By now, news have started to spread to outside of Somerset to nearby shires, soon enough word will read London.

Raid roll: 16 - 47 men disappear, either killed or deserted during the chaos.

Loot roll: Chard - Prosperous Income (£350). Rolled a 1, you manage to find property worth £35.

You gain 50% of the estate's income each year you control it.

While having lost a third of his men by this point already, the local garrison proves no match for Holland.

Raid roll: 6 - 15 men are either killed or desert.

Loot roll: Yeovil - Prosperous Income (£350). Rolled a 1, you find £35 in the manor.

You gain 50% of the estate's income each year you control it.

Holland, his task finally finished, garrisons the remainder of his men in Yeovil. He'd rest for the night at the largest manor house there, and move to London come the morrow.

A few days after the forceful conquest of the Neville lands in Somerset...

Richard rode quietly at head of a column leading to the manor of Welling. Yet when he came before gatehouse, his eyes spy the banners of Holland! He pulls on the reins of his horse and looks around.

What the... What is going on here?!

He rides up to the gatehouse, demanding to speak with whoever is in charge here.

The men at the manor's gate were a little confused at the presence of Richard, and bid him wait whilst they summoned Sir Thomas, the self proclaimed Lord of the Manor. Unfortunately, after an hour or so of waiting, it turned out that he was not present, having taken the road to London a few days before Neville's arrival. The soldiers, when bid to move, simply stay put, and one of the less hostile captains advises the young Neville to speak to Thomas or his father Exeter in London.

Richard was rather frustrated. After going through the rather heated debates in London, he was now forced to return to said city. He rides ahead of his wife's carriage which was escorted under guard back to London.

Holland's men remain in occupation of the manors until the money delivered; but even then it is unlikely they shall move until the end of the year. Exeter has ordered them explicitly to collect a year's worth of rents before leaving the property for the Neville to assume control over.
