    Default Massive FPS drop during battles (Possibly related to shadows quality?)

    Hi

    I am playing as Koinon Hellenon in EB2.2L + supplemental installations for Win 10. I am also playing in borderless window using the provided tool in ebii directory.

    Sometime when I enter the battles (both open field and siege battles), and when my camera is looking at certain directions or angles of the units, my FPS suddenly drops to 1~2 FPS/s which makes the battles unplayable. When I pan the camera to other directions which are not looking at the units (or sometime zooming in), the FPS comes back to normal.

    This seems to happen in situations where there are large density of units in one space, such as enemy units cramming into my defending units after breaching the gate during siege battle and vice versa. It also happens during unit deployment stage where I line up my units close to each other. But I have encountered this problem during open field battles as well.

    My CPU or GPU usage didn't spike when this is happening so I am not sure what exactly is causing this issue. (I have 6700k O.C. to 4.8Ghz, 32gb or ram, and 980TI so I don't think it's spec related).

    One thing I tried was to lower to shadows quality to medium and this seems to ease the problem a bit, but I still get huge FPS drops randomly during battles. Also to add, I don't think I had this issue for older versions of EB2 releases, but started getting them in fairly recent releases after 2.2b.

    Is there a known solution to this problem or perhaps it's fixed in EB2.3 like performance issue with barbarians settlements?

    Thank you in advance and Kudos for such a great mod!

    Have you changed the logging method to "error" rather than "trace"? That makes a big difference to performance (since you don't have ballooning up error logs taking ever-larger chunks of memory).

    Thanks for the fast response! (Sorry, for late reply on my side)

    If you are talking about the ebii.cfg setting mine is set to

    [log]
    to = mods/ebii/logs/eb.system.log.txt
    level = * trace

    So I don't think the logging method is set to "error".

    That's set to trace, which results in ballooning up logs taking ever-greater slices of memory. You need to change trace to error. However, should you hit a repeating crash, you need to change it back again, temporarily, to get the more detailed log to allow diagnosis.

    Something similar keeps happening to me after playing a campaign for a certain number of turns. I'll get to a battle, and the battle will start fine, but at a certain point it will either crash outright, or the FPS will begin to slow down until the game is unplayable. I noticed that, unless I restart my computer entirely, my memory usage after ending the process is ridiculously high, and the massive increase is not due to a visible process (which suggests a memory leak of some sort). The bizarre thing about it is that, upon starting a campaign, nothing ever goes wrong for dozens of turns. Then, at a certain battle, it does what I just described, and I'm forced to abandon the campaign. I tried switching the logging method to "error", and that did absolutely nothing.

    You're running out of memory. Long sessions will do that, so will having trace enabled.

    There are some other memory-related solutions you'll have to research.

    I'm not going through these turns all in one playthrough. It can take weeks for me to get to the point I'm talking about. It always seems to happen eventually, though.
