    Default Dowries well employed

Furnival had little lands to call his own, save some in Yorkshire that he was granted by his father, Lord John Neville of Raby. However, he had soon to yield his daughter's lands, inherited from her mother the baroness, and he had no replacement. Unless he could buy more lands, he could be left almost destitute with a couple hundred pounds of income at the very best. Totally unfitting for the husband of Lady Joan of Gloucester. Thus, Furnival sent agents, clerks and few of his most trusted men to Dewsbury, Wharfdale, Wetherby and Pickering, Ashborne and Blackwell. Pickering bordered his brother's lands of Kirkby, so he personally headed there with a company of riders. Their objective, looking for purchasable land.

Of those messengers sent, only Whetherby sends no reply, indicating they are most likely not interested. However, the landlords of the other lands seem reluctant or rather receptive to Lord Furnival's offer.

Dewsbury states it will sell the land for seven times its worth
Wharfdale states ten times its worth
Pickering desires five times its worth
Ashborne desires four times its worth
Blackwell desires three times its worth

    Pickering-average=1,200
    Blackwell-average=900
    Ashbourne-average=1,500
    --------------------------
    3,600

The price demanded by the lands at Blackwell, Ashbourne and Pickering is deemed acceptable, and the payment is dispatched after the land transfer is completed. Thus, Furnival had, accurately, spent most the dowry in doting himself with a new demesne. Now, most his estates laid in Derbyshire, under the influence of Lancaster.
