    Protectores Domestici Pedites

    Protectores Domestici Equites

    Candidati

    1. At the end of II - beginning of III century. Gladius gradually gave way to sleep. According to Vegetius to the era of Diocletian, at the end of the III., All legionaries were armed with sleep. In Bonn, there is an excellent example of Spata IV c., Found in the Colony, with a blade length of 70.5 cm. It is practically standard length, although there is an instance of Carnuntum with a blade length of 85 cm. The scabbard of the sword is not a Roman type, they are based on a traditional German style, with Celtic loop instead of the usual Roman rings, in which the sword suspended by a sling.

    2. Lorica Plumata - is one of the less common types of Roman flake (lamellar) armor, which was used exclusively by officers of the Roman legion. Because of the low prevalence of this armor, information about it is very scarce, and gather them bit by bit. Despite the fact that the design of the armor is known, not known for certain whether Lorica Plyumata been used by someone else other than the officers. This armor was not only a good remedy, but the hallmark. There is speculation that Lorica Plyumata was forbidden to use ordinary soldiers, if that was the hallmark of the officers, it is logical that the use of ordinary soldiers Plyumaty brings some confusion in the ranks of its own troops.

    3. Such oval shield found in Dura Europos.
Drawing on those shield and other Protectores Domestici, including different to the Western and Eastern Empires - correspond with those in Notitia Dignitatum.

    4. Helmet Protectores Domestici Pedites refers to the infantry type "Kammhelm", that are found in Intercisa.
Helmet Protectores Domestici Equites is a type of cavalry "Kammhelm", which is found in Deurne.

    5. Fighting horses could be scaly armor covering the horse as a whole, but probably full body armor can only be attributed to κατάφρακτος and Clibanarii and partial. At least three of these scaly armor was discovered in the Dura-Europos, one of which is iron, the second and the third bronze leather. Another armor found in Britain. horse mask could be scaly or presented from a metallic (bronze, copper) shamfron, who had not only protective but also other properties. There is mention of the fact that, shamfron greatly frightened enemy horses.

    6. Infantry times Vegetius was still armed with projectile weapons, but not pilum, a spiculum, verutum and plumbata, who probably had their origin from the pilum. Unfortunately, Vegetius does not describe the third weapon, plumbates. However, he says that in the time of Diocletian and Maximian two Illyrian legion received Martiobarbuli nickname (from the Latin «barbula» - «beard notch") for his skill in dealing with these weapons. These two names suggest, that it was a serrated weapon, weighted with lead, and therefore is likely to be legally identified plumbates short jagged dart with lead weighting, which is found in many settlements, III and IV centuries. Roksetera of the sample consists of serrated iron tip lead weights and fragments of a wooden shaft thickness of about 1 cm. neutron radiography showed that the pipe was split. Also found samples with stem with thorns.

    Milites defensores

Defenzory [the Byzantine Empire] - 1) (defensores); the bulk of the infantry units that serve to support cursors if they fail when forced to retreat; 2) (defensores civitatum); created in the second half in IV. Institute of Civil advocates ordinary citizens from the arbitrariness of municipal councils (curiae) and imperial officials. They are appointed for 5 years by the Emperor or the praetorian prefect, and certainly not of the kurialov. Defenzory gradually concentrated in the hands of wide administrative and police law. They monitored the implementation of laws, especially in religious matters, gained control of the municipal police, and became one of the main responsible for order in the cities of the empire.

    Milites Exploratores
The main task exploratores, the number of which, as far as we can tell, was a few dozen people and was to find out exactly the location and advancing enemy forces. From the pseudo-Hyginus (II c.) That the 3 Legion had 200 exploratores (De munit. Castr. 30). In addition, their job was to find out exactly the route that had to go through the main forces, and also to find a place to camp location (Caes. BC 11.17). Before the imperial period Explorator is not a separate independent unit. Speculators are usually operated in high secrecy and therefore have a much smaller number than exploratores - 10 people in the Legion. They were more spies than scouts. Speculators used to conduct operations in night conditions (Ps.-Caes. BH. 28) and for the detection of enemy shelters (ibid. 38).

    Milites Praeventores
Name Praeventores - literally means "pre-emptive", ie something like the avant-garde, or pioneers. Ammianus mentions (18.9.3) Praeventores part in the siege of Amida. The troops standing there (and that the soldiers of the thirtieth legion, the tenth - also called Fortenses, comites sagittarii, and Superventores and Praeventores) made a sortie and killed the greatest number of Persians, while they were sleeping soundly.
As we can see from Ammianus, preventers Legion acted in the East, Singhara and amides. Auxiliary unit Milites Praeventores of Notitsii Dignitatum also belongs the East and the army is under the command of Dux Lower Moesia.
Source: Sidorenko RV .: Late Roman Empire

    Milites Superventores
Recording of Superventores preserved in the list of subordinates under the command of the prefect militum superventorum (Notitia 151,6), stationed in Mannatias under the command of Dux Tractus Armoricani and Nervicani. Sami Superventores seniores in the Notitia are not present. Why these parts are subordinate to the prefect, not tribunus, it is not clear, but it is possible to think that they did not belong to expeditionary units and local units.
There is a record about superventores Milites (Notitia 74,11), which appear under the command of Dux Scythiae, which is a subsidiary parts. Another entry, similar to the parsed here has a name - Numerus supervenientium Petueriensium (Notitia154,15) under komandyvaniem Dux Britanniarum. The exact meaning is unclear Superventores; Ammianus mentions (18.9.3) Superventores part in the siege of Amida. The troops standing there (and that the soldiers of the thirtieth legion, the tenth - also called Fortenses, comites sagittarii, and Superventores and Praeventores) made a sortie and killed the greatest number of Persians, while they were sleeping soundly.

    Legionis Limitanei

    Historical Description
    (Some of the new units):

    Legionis Mattiarii iuniores (comitat)

The main weapon Mattiarii were plumbates - small darts. Plumbatae etymologically contain plumbum, or lead, and can be translated "lead-weighted [darts]". Martiobarbuli in this translation is mattiobarbuli in the Latin, which is most likely an assimilation of Martio-barbuli, "little barbs of Mars." The barb implied a barbed head, and Mars was the god of war.

Drawings on the shield - correspond with those in Notitia Dignitatum, and which relate to the Mattiarii iuniores (West) - Legio Comitatenses.

    Equites Taifali (comitat)
Possibly an eastern Germanic or even Sarmatian people, the Taifali followed the Gothic king, Cniva, on his campaigns in Moesia and Dacia during the 3rd century AD. Coming into contact with the Roman Empire, they soon became famous for their excellent horsemen. Having been defeated by the Emperor Constantine, the Taifali continued to harass their oppressors until finally pacified around AD336. However, this did not lead to their automatic absorption into the Roman Empire, and those Taifali who chose not to resettle within its boundaries became self-governing allies of Rome. This may have been due to perceived difficulties in successfully governing such a harsh, mountainous region, or because the Romans needed a buffer against an increasing number of incursions by the marauding steppe nomads

    Schola

The Scholae Palatinae (literally "Palatine Schools", in Greek: Scholai) were an elite military guard unit, usually ascribed to the Roman Emperor Constantine the Great as a replacement for the equites singulares Augusti, the cavalry arm of the Praetorian Guard. The Scholae survived in Roman and later Byzantine service

    Schola Scutariorum
    Elite guard of shield-guards

    Schola Armaturarum
    Elite guard heavy-armored cavalry

    Schola Gentilium
The word gentilium can be translated as - alien (alien hostile tribe)

    Schola Scutariorum Clibanariorum
Elite guard of heavy super-armored cavalry shock shield-guards

    ---------------------------

    Comites Catafractarii Bucellarii
After the 'Imperial Crisis' of the 3rd century AD, the Roman Empire found itself with no public policing, and so the administration of peace and justice in the cities became a military matter - for palatinae and the myriad Imperial guards. On the outskirts and in the more affluent rural countryside, wealthy landowners maintained peace through specially-hired private soldiers, known as bucellarii. 'Bucellarii' translates as 'dry biscuit eater', because of the rations they were provided. Private funding meant that they were generally better equipped and skilled than regular troops, and the added incentive of private payment also kept them performing at their best. Bucellarii were required to take an oath not only to their private employer, but also to the Emperor, to ensure no conflicts of loyalty\
