Recommend you check out the UG Civil war, it's leagues better and will eventually cover the entire war. Good gameplay, persistent and customizable army, veterancy and equipment and all that good stuff. Amusingly enough, they just added the battle of Gettysburg to it.

Gettysburg was more like a prototype than a real game, which is fine, just saying.

Same way the LW team just released LW2 after a year in development, plus I no doubt they have their hands in the mysterious new Xcom2 dlc that surfaced yesterday. Easier to start small and with what you know.
