Veritas Temporis Filia
Lord John Montagu and his wife Maud Francis leave London for Berkshire Manor.
Veritas Temporis Filia
The Duke of Lancaster arrives at Montagu's London house, wishing to speak with the Earl of Salisbury. He's accompanied by a large entourage of household knights, retainers, and servants, all wearing some form of Lancastrian device.
The Duke is ofcourse granted an audience immediately, the duke is led by one of Montagu's servants to the dinner room, where both the Earl and the Countess eagerly awaited the arrival of their guest. Your Grace, the earl and his wife inclined their heads, this Duke is one of the richest and most powerful peer of the realm they know and therefore liked to befriend him.
Veritas Temporis Filia
"Lord Salisbury." Greeted the Duke, a characteristic chaperon sat atop his head. His own servants were sent away to sit and dine with their peers in another hall, whilst Gaunt himself took a seat opposite his host. "I heard of your uncle's passing. You have my sympathies" Gaunt had of course served with the previous earl on campaign in France, on numerous occasions. He had seemed competent enough.
Lord Lancaster. The earl replied in kind, he ordered servants to bring in wine for the duke, the earl then proceeded to take his seat opposite to that of the Duke while his wife sat on the head of the table. I take comfort in the fact that he is reunited with his deceased children now, may God bless them. The earl ofcourse knows that his uncle had served with Gaunt in several campaigns, the earl made the sign off the cross. How may we help you, my noble lord?. Salisbury knowing that the Duke is here not just for his deceased uncle.
Veritas Temporis Filia
"I come to thee with an offer, Lord Salisbury. I know you to be a great landholder, and a beneficiary of Arundel's downfall like myself." Lancaster smiled slightly, knowing that this would perhaps be a sensitive subject. Bastards were the product of sin and thus born with evil within them, or so that priest he had confessed to lectured him. "My son, John, similarly did benefit. It is my wish to leave him with some lands of his own, you see." The Beauforts did not have the security afforded to their legitimate half-brother, Bolingbroke, who already was a wealthy landowner, as well as Gaunt's own formidable inheritance to sustain him. The thought of leaving his children with nothing galled him, should he pass suddenly; to Henry, these siblings would be nothing but a burden, surviving off a brother's charity.
Aha. The earl smiled in return, so the Duke came here for his bastard from his mistress the earl thought, undoubtedly the duke would come with an offer to purchase some of his lands for a big sum of money, it made sense for him to do so as Bastards do not get title's nor the estate's of their fathers as inheritance, often fading into obscurity. Yes i did benefit from Arundel's foolish rebellion as did your son John, did he not receive lands from the king? the earl rhetorically inquired, he ofcourse heard that the bastard got himself lands, the earl wondered why the duke approached him for lands if the bastard got himself lands already from the king. Your son has already lands by the generosity of the King so why are you worrying for his future? the earl wouldn't give up his lands so lightly for a bastard.
Veritas Temporis Filia
"He received a small portion, yes. A small prize for the King's own cousin." Lancaster reminded Salisbury pridefully. Beaufort was a bastard indeed, but an important one. And it was Gaunt's hope that the stain of bastardy would soon be washed away. "I'm willing to pay a handsome amount for lands within Somerset." The Duke could offer more than gold, too. He had the King's ear, especially since the incident involving the Appellants.
I understand, afterall a father wants only the best for his children, no? It could bring long term benefits, the Duke is the uncle of the king so the duke would have plenty of influence over the king and befriending the duke would be a wise move. I'm willing to hand over Dunster and Bridgewater in Richmonshire over to your noble son in exchange for three years worth its income (975£) and for a good word in the kings ear. that way Salisbury could profit of these estates for three more years and have a powerful ally within the realm who has the king's ear.
Veritas Temporis Filia
"I shall make it a thousand, then." Gaunt responded amicably, glad that the deal had been concluded. Perhaps he could secure some peerage for his son, in the near future. "When, if God is good, you father an heir, Lord Montagu, I shall see to it that he marries the richest heiress in Christendom. You have my word upon it." Perhaps there would be opportunities soon, he mused, with such a large number of lands becoming vacant after the demise of the Appellants.

Excellent, excellent. Lord Salisbury replied, glad to count Gaunt as an ally, though he frowned a bit mentioning a heir. I do hope i get a successor one day, maybe it will be a little girl, who knows. Salisbury didn't mind at this point, it is up to God to decide he thought, the only thing he can do at this point is to further rise in height. Perhaps Salisbury could even profit more from the incoming trial.
Veritas Temporis Filia
"Who knows, indeed." Gaunt nodded slightly. Such things were often hit and miss, and he didn't pretend to know what controlled such things. Some men seemed to have swarms of children, and others none at all. "I shall hope for it, Lord Salisbury, and drink to your good health."
To both our good health! Lord Salisbury nodded indicating that the conversation has ended.

Henry, Earl of Hereford arrives to speak with the Earl of Salisbury. He is freshly returned from Windsor and the incident concerning the King.
A large party of men arrives at the Montagu house. Retainers and knights and servants all flying the white rose of York. At their head the heir of York Edward of Norwich. Seeking an audience with the head of the family.
The earl of Hereford is welcomed in the main hall of Monatgu's manor, Lord Salisbury ofcourse had expected that these lords would crawl to him to bid for his support on who is to be in charge during the king's absence or even death, salisbury would not give in so lightly he vowed. Your Grace. He politely said with a small grin. What a day it was, is it not? he asked rhetorically
Lord York is ofcourse welcomed too in the main hall, it seems the day would be busier than expected, several servants were already bringing in food and wine to consume while Lord and Lady salisbury both welcomed York. Your Grace. Salisbury welcomed York with a grin on his face, he had an idea why he was here. What brings you to my 'humble' estate?. his estate was ofcourse not humble

"Whats the grin about Montagu?" Edward asked as he dismounted his horse. He made his way on the steps of this 'Humble' estate.
"Is there somewhere we can talk in private?"
Salisbury now hid his slight smile. I expected visits after recent events that have transpired and look we have a visitor!. he ofcourse referred to the king and his accident. Ofcourse, follow me. Salisbury led York through the many chambers of his manor up until they arrived to a small private chamber in the upper part of the building. You wish to talk me privately?. His voice allowed him to start talking privately
Salisbury ordered his servants to bring in wine and food for the earl, he recalled many things from that tournament it seems,e he offered a seat aswell. Alot. replied the aging voice. The king is either to die or is to be in bad shape for a long time it seems, meanwhile in the king's absence groups will be formed to rule in his stead, especially groups will form around possible claimants. Salisbury is no fool.

"Yes. The Crown cannot be entrusted to a cloistered child, like Mortimer." Hereford took a sip of wine. His head still ached, and alcohol went some way to dulling it. "That is, if our dear king even passes. I pray to God it will not be so. But still, a government must be formed, to protect the Kingdom from the vipers."
