    Default Gloucester House

Gloucester House is the London residence of the Duke of Gloucester and Aumale, Thomas of Woodstock. This lavish estate has been a possession of the Plantagenet since the reign of his father, Edward III.

The Lord Chancellor and Duke of Gloucester was still moving back into his estate. A servant brings Sir Thomas to where Gloucester was, which was within his solar, placing books back upon a shelf. The servant bows before leaving. Gloucester turns to see Mortimer, gesturing for the guest to enter. He snaps his fingers, causing another servant to appear with a tray in his hand; a jug of wine and two cups were set upon his desk and filled. Thomas walks over, taking a cup and offering another to Sir Mortimer.

Sir Thomas, welcome. Please, take a seat. What brings you to my attention?

"I must first offer my thanks and gratitude that you have named my nephew as the Lord Lieutenant of Ireland," Mortimer began, taking the cup, "As well as my appointment to the Mastery of the Horse," he added, and then paused to drink from the cup.

"As he is still too young, however, to pursue his duties there, it likely falls to whoever we appoint as his deputy. That is," he said, elaborating, "me. This means that I must depart England entirely; Ireland will not accept a completely absent lord lieutenant."

Then I will have to see about a new Master of Horse as you plan to serve your nephew as his deputy. I felt that if anyone could serve as Lord Lieutenant of Ireland, it should be a Mortimer.

Thomas of Woodstock drinks from his cup, before sitting down behind his desk. He gestures to a chair, offering for Sir Thomas to sit.

Do you know what your nephew plans to do in Ireland?

Thomas suppressed a laugh, smiling awkwardly.
"My lord of Gloucester, my nephew is only fourteen this year; I believe him not yet capable of having a sense for what must be done in Ireland, or for any office just yet, in his young age. You might ask him that question yourself, however, in a few years, when the king gives him his honors - I am confident he'll have bright ideas then, as such youths are full of notions and ambitions."

He gestured and sat the cup down.
"For now, I will set about putting some order to the island, as best I can. Dublin requires a firm hand, my lord Gloucester, and a patient tongue. Something about Ireland makes men's blood boil - whoever is in charge of it needs to resist those humors."

And lord above all knew how easily Thomas' blood boiled.

I still remember how my youth was, Sir Thomas. Raised in the midst of the war my father, Edward III, fought so hard for. I remember how my youth was spent on campaigns in Brittany, all in the name of Duke John IV. Ah... have those years flown by. Make sure your nephew knows not to waste them, Sir Thomas. I know he is a smart boy, but he must use every day to its fullest!

There was truth in Mortimer's words about Ireland. Something about Ireland always caused men's blood to boil, whether that man be English or Irish.

I am confident that you will serve your nephew well, Sir Thomas. Make sure that the peace in Ireland is kept strong.

The bastard of March bowed from the waist with a semblance of etiquette. He smiled amiably, closing his eyes in some sort of display of servile humility.
"Of course, Lord Chancellor. I intend to hold a parliament in Dublin as soon as is convenient. It would be a first step to approaching the endless land disputes."

Arundel walked into the solar of the Duke of Gloucester calmly and seats himself as bid, sipping his wine before replying. "We have known each other for some time, Thomas, and we began this affair as joint leaders of the Lords Appellant together, in respect of that, I would like you to speak plainly. Do you intend to depose the King?"

Do what must be done to secure a significant presence of order within Ireland, Sir Mortimer. I am counting on you to do your best for England.

Gloucester was pleased that Sir Mortimer was willing to work with the Lords Appellant in ensuring a lasting order within Ireland.

Gloucester's eyebrow goes up slightly at the question. When the two had come to blows, the thought had occurred in his mind of replacing Richard, but with who. Ever since that row, he had not even slightly consider it.

"No I do not intend to depose the King. It is true that a number of the decisions were made with his approval that hurt our realm, but to depose him would only further weaken England and split our whole realm apart. Only making us a tempting target for our southern and northern neighbors."

Arundel nodded slowly, gathering his thoughts before moving onto the next piece of business. "The Heir Presumptive is Roger Mortimer. Currently he is warded with my brother in law - a staunch supporter of the King. I think we can both agree that it would be more beneficial for us to have the Heir to the Throne raised in an Appellant household as my squire? I have warded the boy before, after all."

"He is getting to the point that he will become a man though. Sir Roger Mortimer visited here earlier, assuring me of his intentions for Ireland as his nephew's deputy."

He leans back in his chair, pondering upon the supposed heir apparent. Yet his mind did wander to John of Gaunt.

"Yet to have him in our influence may help our cause. I doubt the King would approve of changing his ward though."

"Young enough yet to squire. Perhaps if my brother could be influenced in this it would be possible - I shall talk to him in the Tower."

Arundel gave a small smile. "Sir Thomas is a good man - capable and intelligent. He rode with my retinue to Radcot and put a knife through Molineux's eye."

With Gloucester on the Tower clerks and men wearing the royal liveries arrive to inspect his house and make a list of his earthly possessions in London. They're to take documents, letters patent, charters and every single scrap of parchment of value. Every vessel, jewel or item of value will be moved in carts to the tower.
