Organized into thirteen companies of foot, five squadrons of men at arms, seven squadrons of mounted archers, and Sir Butler's squadron of twenty mounted archers recently bolstered by twenty hobelars in his brother's employ.
One of Butler's knights takes the invitation from the rider to the Earl of Ormond's study. "Letter for you, milord." Butler takes the letter and reads it. "A banquet..even if it is one of his majesty's uncles hosting it, it is not worth the trip to England for such an occasion." Butler says before discarding the invitation into the fireplace of his study.
A rider in De Vere colors brings word that the Duke of Ireland, having been punted back into Ireland by Gaunt, wishes to see his old faithful governor Ormond in Dublin - there is to be a campaign against the Gaels of Leinster soon.
A knight in the service of the Butlers enters the Earl's study. James and Thomas look up from the map of Ireland they were studying, with figurines scattered across the map. "Yes, what is it?" "A messenger of the Duke of Ireland, my lord. The Duke wishes for you to ride to Dublin to meet with him to discuss a campaign into Leinster." "Thank you. Tell his messenger that we shall ride for Dublin with all haste." "Of course, my lord." Thomas gives his brother a questioning look, followed by James letting out a sigh. "Thomas, de Vere had nothing to do with the Mortimer being restored less than a year after we assisted him against the Lords Appellants' choice for Lord Lieutenant." "He could've petitioned the King to reverse it..and who is to say we will get anything from this just as we were promised rewards for throwing Mortimer out of Dublin, and got nothing?" "We shall discuss that when we get to Dublin. I will not assist in this campaign without getting something for our house, brother. Whether it be lands for you to have as your own, expanding my demense, or something..." "I also presume I will be representing us on this campaign." James smiles. "Of course, after all, you do enjoy military matters more than I do..now let us prepare for our journey."
