Default Medieval 2 Installation error Windows 10

I have had Medieval 2 on windows 10 for quite a long time and have had no issues. Last night out of nowhere I got this message when starting it up "This application is not compatible with the installed operating system. Please upgrade to Windows 98SE, Windows 2000 or better"

I have never received this before. I have tried reinstalling but I am getting the same message just double clicking to start the install. I have researched how to uninstall the recent windows 10 updates but I have found nothing. I tried a reinstall of windows 10 but I'm getting the same error message(it wasn't a full install just a modified one where it keeps your documents but removes apps)

If anyone has any advice/help it would be appreciated

    Thank you in advance!

It's possible an update is causing your game to crash. That's the problem I had.

I have my doubts Matthew. If his game was already running smoothly on Windows 10 (which comes with the secdrv.sys disabled by default), it's probably not SafeDisc.

Are you using discs, or Steam, exyus77?

I did a fresh install of Windows 10 on both my systems when I upgraded, so I can't comment whether that is preferable to the "modified" one.

update KB3211320 i believe is the culprit but i have found no way to either rollback/uninstall the update. which really sucks because i quite enjoy this game.

I'm using discs to install. I have the kingdoms gold discs.

I don't exactly remember the way, as I migrated to Linux, but one of the reasons that pushed me to take the decision was a problem similar to yours. IIRC I was advised by ElvenKind back then to right click the game application, click the Compatibility tab and try different OSs. I believe every change you make there can be reverted so no hurt in trying that out too. Keep us updated if it works!

By the way, welcome to the fora! In case you didn't already know, there is this thread called "Welcome to TWC", where you can stop by and say hello if you like.

What leads you to suspect it is KB3211320?

N.b.: in case anyone is confused, the update relevant to the SafeDisc issue is KB3086255. KB3211320, meanwhile, is a different, more recent update.

Update KB3211320 was the latest update roughly 5 days ago and that is when M2 started this issue. But interestingly enough Microsoft issued another update today and now its fixed and i can reinstall it. So strange. Thank you for the help in trying to solve this. Really appreciate it.

Very interesting. I'll have a look around later to see if I can find any info on it. I'm glad to hear you're able to play again.
