After setting out from Gondor towards mordor what battles did orophin, elendil and gilgalad have with sauron. I mean obviousy there was the one beneath mount doom but were there any others? Most importantly at the black gates?
First there was battle of Dagorglad, after this Alliance sieged Barad-Dur for seven years, during the siege was Anarion killed.. And finally there was that last battle when Sauron and his forces tried to sally out..This was the battle where Gilgalad and Elendil got killed.
From the north, I believe, via Udun. Itīs the logical route, if you look on the maps (and remember that Tolkien has been a soldier, an officer, in World War I himself, so he knew what he was writing about)
And if I recall corrently, the army of the Last Alliance didnīt gather in Minas Arnor, but in Eriador at Weathertop, and moved south along the Anduin river. One important event preceding the battles of the Last Alliance was Saurons sacking of Hollin, where Sauron killed Celebrimbor and captured the Seven and Nine rings, and his march towards the Havens in Lindon, which was stopped by Gondorian reinforcements arriving in Lindon by ship. So basically, the Army of the Last Alliance pursued Saurons army all the way from Hollin to the plain of Dargorlad, the logical place for Sauron to make a stand, with short supply lines for his own army and the Alliance army worn out by the long march.
In the battle of Dagorlad the Alliance army routed Saurons forces and marched on to besiege the Dark Tower. Perhaps another force moved into Mordor via the Minas Ithil road (It would be a couple of centuries before Minas Ithil would become Minas Morgul, after all) in a pincer move, though that would be hard to coordinate with only medieval-era means of communication.
Life is a sequence of missed opportunities
