do people just turtle up for a bit before branching out? most factions don't exactly have much income and some factions have settlements really far apart like Skaven. Do you just build up and wait for a bit or just go take things immediately?

I suppose it depends on the faction, for spread out empires, I've seen people cash out on certain holdings and leave them basically defenseless, and get aggressive immediately in other areas. In general though I think people assemble 1 army, build a bunch of econ upgrades, and hire as many merchants as they are allow on turn 1.
