Hey there, just something Iīve recently seen in an article Iīve read on JSTOR.

Spoiler Alert, click show to read:

taken from The Battle Scene on Aemilius Paullus's Pydna Monument: A Reevaluation

This is part of the Aemilius Paullus Monument at Delphi.

The figure on the left is obviously a Hellenic soldier, though itīs unclear whether heīs in Antigonid or Attalid employment.
Peculiar about him is that his shield, even though it is secured to his forearm by a Porpax and he holds it with an Antilabe, doesnīt have the typical Aspis rim.

Is this an Aspis? Or is this maybe a bigger version of the Macedonian Pelta?
From what Iīve recently read, it seems the rim on an Aspis made it possible for Hoplites to survive the rigors of Phalanx together without dying of asphyxation.

It could IMO be that, since Hoplites had been replaced by Phalangitai, Aspidai were made without their rim to reduce weight.
    What are your thoughts?

But then, I ask you, where is that rim we usually see on aspides?
Maybe there were no rims on late period aspides anymore, due to lack of hoplite against hoplite engagement.

Anyway, sorry for hogging this thread, but I didnīt want to open a new one just for this^^

It does look like aspis to me too.

It could be a type of shield that was found in Bonce too (below is a reconstruction):

That said, as valuable the visual sources are, one has to remember that the artist may have distorted reality in order to achieve an artistic effect - a creative license, if you will. Or simply don't care about these details at all. Either way, they have to be taken with a pinch of salt, just like any other source, at least that's my take

Another unit preview is ready, this time it's the Cyrenean Spear Cavalry:

That wasn't actually the point of my argument, rather that IMO it were possible for late-Hellenic Aspides to have no rim,
as it had possibly lost its function.

    The units look really good!

With that I agree, some shields similar to the one you describe were found - that is concave and rimless.

These units are this texture resource: http://www.twcenter.net/forums/showt...xtures-for-You!

There's A LOT of new linothorax armour textures in the mod. There's one slight problem, however, the game's crashed on me once or twice - perhaps these textures are a bit too big?

I used Germans Texture a lot in my mods. Never watched a crash, so no worry. You should verify your steam cache instead.

Thanks, I was worried I wouldn't be able to use those.

EDIT: You were right, Steam downloaded 1,9 gigabyte and the game's back to being stable.
