Default Looking for the 'Stainless Steel' historically-based overhaul mod of the classical period - Is AE the mod for me?

    Hi all,

First of all, I just want to say thanks and well done to the mod team and all contributors for the work you've been doing the last few years on this project - the preview video looks amazing and I can't wait for the campaign to be released.

So, I've been listened to The History of Rome podcast and have started re-watching SurrealBelief's historical Rome 2 playthrough (very good if you haven't seen it, even if he does ramble). I want to play the most complete and historically accurate version of an early Roman campaign.

Most people seem to say that Rome 2, despite being patched is a soulless game and I got this feeling the last time I played it a few years ago. The majority of people say Attila is just a much better engine with better features and functions. It's also the most current historical Total War game until the next one comes out.

Looking at the modding scene here on the forums, there seems to be a wealth of mods claiming to be doing the same thing, but hardly any of them are fully fleshed out or playable yet.

Divide et Impera for R2TW is mentioned a lot, but apparently it focuses on including units rather than historical gameplay, and that's about it for R2TW...

For Attila, I've stumbled across this mod last night. Attila also has the Medieval mod which I need to take a look at, because Stainless Steel for M2TW was a major enjoyable timesink for me.

So, which game and mod(s) do you guys recommend for a good, historically based Roman campaign? Is AE going to be the historical drool-fest I need?

What? : D No, we are not that kind of mod. We have made a lot of effort into adding historical gameplay as we have different reforms for different cultures, supply system, population system with multiple social classes, completly new BAI with multistaged battles etc. AE mod was made at first as a submod for older DeI and now is standalone project for Attila. Our goals are still similar but we use different games and starting dates. We still work together and share our stuff so until AE has campaign released, you can play DeI

Not quite KAM xD we were standalone for Rome 2 at first but as we moved to Attila we didnt have the manpower to work on both games at once, so we switch to Attila and asked if you guys would help us with our Rome 2 mod in return for mutual support and sharing of knowledge and work.

Which, if I do say so myself, has turned out quite nicely for the both of us

I would aboid Let's Play as they are covering mostly pre 1.0 release, 1.0 and 1.1 release, while we are not at 1.2 release, which is a gamechanger in all aspects compared to previous versions Also 1.2 is not yet on steam so you would need to download it from our TWC subforum

Here is a summary of 1.2 changes, although there are many stuff introduced before, that are not in 1.2 preview plus some stuff that we are still working on.

Pete, I remember ABH working on a submod for DeI, which later evolved into standalone project, which later evolved into DeI submod before fully moving to Attila DeI also wasn't DeI at first so I might have screwed the continuity

Btw, Pete, I will have some morale questions for you tomorrow, hope you have some time in the evening

Unfortunately AE doesn't cover early Rome due to the map limitations of Attila, but everything from the Zama to Trajan will eventually be covered in great detail. We are sticklers for accuracy wherever we have the manpower to make it so (as such some of our Republican Rome and Carthaginian ect units are a little unhistorical but no one but the most learned of players would even notice as the inaccuracies are small). We also have a very complex building system similar to Roma Surrectum II which I personally think is amazing, as well as lots of in depth and immersive features like generals and leaders having different traits and the very real possibility of generals and heirs in particular becoming jaded and rebelling against a specific leader.

Eventually we will also have events all the way from things like the Social Wars to the mass rebellion of Gaul, of course all these things can't happen at a set date so we try to steer the player in a historical-ish path through objectives and scripted events so that whatever the time frame, the player will expand realistically (this is only planned for Rome atm and is a long way off being done). We also have a huge focus on armies surviving battles and wars that last several years. We want to move away from the bland vanilla mechanics and invent our own, with much more to handle for the player and much more difficulty with as little artificial boosts to the AI as possible. Difficulty will hopefully be achieved by giving the player a lot to focus on and a lot of things to go wrong, so that when something goes bad it goes bad quick.

Rome 2 with DEI was by far the best experience I've ever had playing a total war game. I don't think you have a full understanding of how awesome and accurate that mod is. This mod on Atilla gives me a fun custom battle experience.

Absolutely one of the best for sure. DeI and EB2 are the 2 best historical mods for any TW games IMO.

You traitor, how could you betray your own mod like that! xD I think RSII combat felt way more historical than EB's ever did. Though with the scripts and the campaign and such I get where you are coming from.

Without any doubt! DeI turned one of the weakest TWs into a gem.

I'll be happy if AE manages even a tench of what DeI is at now. Frankly, personally, I'd be overcome with pride if the scripts I'm writing for AE manage to be even a tenth of what DeI's scripts are.
