Hello everyone, I have been playing Total war games for years but it has been some time since I played M2TW as I gave my cd to my niece and nephew. Recently I found the cd on Amazon for "like new" for $4 and it works great. I have already played several campaigns as Milan, Byzantines, Egyptians, France and the Moors. I have actually played as every faction before and I have researched the game heavily. I am considering righting a guide but I am holding off for now.
Now everyone knows the AI sucks. Without any mods it is you vs the entire AI world and this sucks because the AI sucks and the game is way to easy. Also diplomacy pretty much means nothing. I do not own nor have I every played Kingdoms so I could not try Stainless Steel or Third Age but I did an extensive search for other mods and they all did not work or had no download link. I managed to get Ultimate AI and Darthmod but both of them did not work. All I really wanted to do was just make the AI better. I love the Vanilla Game.
Well I finally found (Jack?) Lusted's AI and got it to work but I noticed most people were confused on how to install it so here we go.This is only for those that have M2TW Vanilla with the 1.2 patch although I read it should work with Kingdoms but you may have to install an additional patch.
STEP 1: Find the 1.2 patch online. A google search should find sites that are hosting it. This patch is easy to install and you do not need the 1.0 patch to install 1.2 so only install the 1.2 patch. Click the download button and follow the instructions. This fixes several bugs in the game and improves diplomacy some.
STEP 2: Go to this website: http://t-a-w.blogspot.com/2013/01/medieval-2-total-war-concentrated.html The link takes you to a site where a mod is being hosted that allows you to randomly generate your starting locations for each team. Now this mod is to confusing to install so I only took Lusted's AI from it. If you do install the entire mod and you have issues you will have to do a total reinstall of the game and start over. Again I do not know how to install the mod but we don't need it.
STEP 3: Now inside the mod folder that you downloaded you will find two separate folders. BAI and CAI. (Battle and Campaign AI) Take only these folders and move them to your desktop where you can easily find them for now. Now find your M2TW game folder. You will probably have to go to "Local Disk (C" and go to program folders. You should find a Sega Folder and M2TW is inside there.
STEP 4: Go to your "Data" folder in M2TW. Copy all of the files from your BAI (highlight the files and right click and copy) and paste them into the "Data" folder. Now do the same with the CAI. Nothing in the folder will match these files and that is fine. Do not put the entire folders in there. Just the files. All of them.
STEP 5: Go out of your "Data" folder and find your "World" folder. Go to maps, campaign and then imperial campaign. Go into your "desc_strat.txt" file and scroll down until you find all three of the islamic factions. (Egypt,Turks,Moors) and change the Ai_label to "islam" for each faction.
FINAL STEPNow find your M2TW shortcut on the desktop. Right click and go to properties. Find the shortcut name. It will look like this:
"C:\Program Files (x86)\SEGA\Medieval II Total War\Launcher.exe"
Now you need it to look like this:
"C:\Program Files (x86)\SEGA\Medieval II Total War\Launcher.exe" --io.file_first
Make sure to have a space between .exe" and --io.
Now it should work. Just go into your M2TW game and play
The AI now makes full stacks, builds forts, defends cities better, has better diplomacy and in battles they have better armies, some with all cavalry and they even have cavalry on their flanks. It makes for a better game.
You can also unlock all factions in the "desc_strat.txt" folder and even change the rebel spawn so rebel armies can't spawn. I don't have time to explain these two but google searches will help you and I might explain these later. I hope this helps. Enjoy everyone.
This works for M2TW Vanilla with the 1.2 patch and without Kingdoms. For Kingdoms you may need another patch.
