Hmm, when I double left-click on a unit it takes me to that unit and then stops. I don't think I've ever seen it locked onto a unit. Doesn't it break when you select another unit or some place on the minimap? In any case, your best bet is, as atthias said, unticking the camera restrictions box.

Double clicking on a unit (card or actual unit) will center the camera on it but will not follow the unit and should be freely available after that action. Why it switches to the 'general's camera' mode I have no idea. Check if you have that mode enabled.

Edit: I have corrected the slightly misleading thread title

If I double-click on a unit card, I do follow that unit (if it is moving), but only for a few seconds, before the camera "stops" while the unit keeps moving. I've always liked it, as it's as if I'm riding or running along with the unit.

If I recall correctly then pressing 'delete' does the same but keeps being 'attached' until you press 'delete' again - which then returns you to the spot where pressed first. That's always a bit like twilight zone, especially when you did it with a 'clean up' unit at the end of an encounter.
Come to think of it - it's a bit like what the OP describes.
