Hello everybody, I'm very new to SS, but I've been fiending for a nice medieval campaign lately and this fit the bill perfectly. I dusted off my Med2 and installed it to Steam recently and played a little bit, but it was just too easy. I got to looking around and everyone said SS was the best. So then I installed SS 6.3, then 6.4, and finally the BugFix 1.27 and got going.
It seemed like everything was fine, it launched perfect, started campaigns with no problems, but for some reason, it crashed all the time when trying to load into battles. It was pretty much 50/50 whether or not I'd load into a regular field battle. Siege battles were particularly bad, with a crash 9/10 when trying to load into a siege battle. It kept telling me my graphics settings were too high, which is odd, considering the game is so old and my computer so new, but whatever. I looked around on the forum here and found that I shouldn't play with huge unit sizes, so I turned it down to normal and that seems to have fixed the CTD for now. I have to say I'm a little disappointed as I do rather enjoy the bigger units on the battlefield. Any advice on what could be done in order to get bigger units without the crashing? I'd be very appreciative.
Now that I can actually load into battles, I've noticed that the battle map is black in the UI, the sky is black, and there are several other chunks of the UI that are black blobs with buttons inside. What the heck happened? Was my install corrupt from the beginning and it was just seeming to run OK on the campaign but the battle files were ruined?
You folks around here seem to have the info I'd need so I thought I'd ask.
