Thread: ebii.cfg not working, along with several other issues

    Basically the title. ebii.cfg isn't doing what it should be doing. The part under [log] reads:

    [log]
    to = mods/ebii/logs/eb.system.log.txt
    level = * trace

    but the actual logs folder is always empty when I crash (the error log file is just in the Medieval II folder)

    The part under [video] reads:

    [video]
    movies = 1
    windowed = 1
    borderless_window = 1

    And as far as I can tell I'm not in borderless window, I'm in fullscreen. I also can't use the W/F switcher thing. I click on the .jar file and nothing happens, no window opens up.

    I'm getting frequent crashes on the campaign map, often it will just instantly close with no error randomly when I click something, sometimes it will CTD and tell me to upload the error log file here, but of course it isn't in the logs folder.

    The UI often messes up fairly frequently due to memory leak; buttons are often inexplicably covered up by bits of menu and the minimap often moves around so it is completely unusable (this only seems to happen when it is zoomed in). Saving and reloading always seems to fix it.

    I've tried deleting that map file and reinstalling both Medieval and the mod from scratch to no avail. To be honest I think I might just forget about Europa Barbarorum and go back to RTW if I can't fix this, which is a shame because it looked like a great mod from the little I could play.

    I am using steam by the way.

    What version are you playing? What operating system?

    Did you follow the installation instructions for 2.2b to the letter? Including moving M2TW outside of Program Files if it's there?

    Have you adjusted your medieval2.preferences.cfg? That may be overwriting the other config. And have you set the config to read-only after editing?

    Have you tried using "true" instead of 1?

    There are mods out there which can help with memory issues.

    I'm using 2.2f. That is the most up to date right? My operating system is Windows 8 (Windows 10 causes a load of issues with older games in my experience, but I don't see why that would affect me).

    Yeah, M2TW is not in program files or program files (x86). It is in a separate directory to all my other steam games.

    I have edited the resolution in medieval2.preferences.cfg, but only after I realised ebii.cfg was not working. There was no mention of resolution in ebii.cfg anyway. Neither of them are read only. Should they be?

    I have tried both 1 and true and there is no change.

    Just to be clear, I am not entirely sure if I am in fullscreen or borderless window - when I tab out there is a loading bar when I tab back in, and when I lower the resolution in options it stays fullscreen, so I figured I was not in borderless window. Either way, it is the same both before and after I edit ebiii.cfg and I can't check the W/F switcher to change it.

    I thought that memory leak was an intrinsic bug. Which mods fix it?

    Thanks.

    Both files should be read-only, to prevent the game arbitrarily altering them, once you have your config set correctly. As I understand it, the M2TW one is used as a backup for lines missing in the EBII one. Not sure what happens if there's a conflict.

    This is the contents of my EBII.cfg:

    Code: [View]
    [features]
    mod = mods/EBII
    editor = 1

    [log]
    to = mods/ebii/logs/eb.system.log.txt
    level = * trace

    [video]
    movies = 1
    windowed = 1
    borderless_window = 1
    no_background_fmv = 0
    unit_detail = high

    [misc]
    show_hud_date = true
    display_error_on_exit = 1
    #bypass_sprite_script = 1

    [io]
    file_first = 1
    disable_file_cache = 1

    [game]
    allusers = 1
    unlimited_men_on_battlefield = 1
    advisor_verbosity = 1
    blind_advisor = 0
    mute_advisor = 1
    auto_save = 0
    event_cutscenes = 0

    [multiplayer]
    playable = 0
    factions = 1

    [hotseat]
    passwords = 0 ## use individual passwords for players
    turns = 0 ## force separate human faction turns (including diplomacy) in hotseat campaign
    autoresolve_battles = 1 ## force autoresolve for all battles in hotseat campaign
    disable_console = 0				## disable console in hotseat campaign.
    disable_papal_elections = 1 ## disable voting in papal elections in hotseat campaign (only first valid human faction votes)
    save_prefs = 1 ## force relevant hotseat options to be saved with game.
    save_config = 1 ## save config file in save dir containing information about next players turn
    update_ai_camera = 1 ## enable camera updates during ai turn in hotseat campaign
    validate_diplomacy = 1 ## enable diplomacy validation for incoming propositions
    scroll = 0 ## show start turn scroll in hotseat campaign
    admin_password = password ## specify password for administrator access to the dev console when console disabled. Change 'password' to a suitable password
    autosave = 0 ## autosave hotseat game at start of players turn
    close_after_save = 0			## close medieval II directly after a hotseat autosave

    Thanks! I'll try this and see if it works.

    Well, logs still aren't appearing

    I just got a crash starting a battle, here's the system.log from Medieval II Total War

    You didn't try to patch from 2.2 to 2.2f did you? That's a suspiciously low number of EBD errors, you need to first install 2.2b, then install 2.2f.

    That is what I did, I'm playing 2.2f right now. I did check before I installed 2.2f and I could start up the game just fine in 2.2b.

    By the way, since I changed the ebii.cfg little else changed (I set it to borderless window successfully with medieval2.preferences.cfg) BUT now the game does not run through steam as it did before, but through the desktop launcher (for steam users). Using steam to start it up just opens Medieval II.

    Should I reinstall 2.2f or something?

    I'm out of ideas, I'm afraid. It's inexplicable why there are certain people who can't get the config to work.

    Damn, I'll probably write it off as a steam issue then and hope it doesn't cause trouble.

    As to why I keep crashing in the same place (enemies have just sallied out of Messana and I crash after the loading screen) I have no idea. I tried a save from the turn before and attacked instead, I got into the battle fine, but after I won and tried to exit out, it crashed (I think that's what that log is). Could it be graphics settings?

    By the way, my game directory (the one for medieval II only, as all my others are in program files(x86)) is:

    E:\NEW STEAM\steamapps\common\Medieval II Total War

    Just in case there's something wrong with that.

    Thanks anyway, I'll keep an eye out for clues or problems that could help I guess

    EDIT: I did copy and paste the contents of your ebii.cfg straight into mine, and after that the mod inexplicably stopped working through steam, could that be an issue? Are you not using a steam version.

    That was the config for the dev build; mine's retail so may not be helpful.

    The only think I can suggest is to do an uninstall of everything; then clean re-installation of 2.2b, followed by patching to 2.2f.

    UPDATE: I have reinstalled from scratch and the W/F switcher is now working; turns out it was just Java.
