Whilst making a speach Mr. Karlov, ambassador for three years was shot by Mevlut Mert Altinas, a Turkish riot-police officer

The days before there were massive anti-russian protests in turkey against its role in Syria. Altinas shouted vengeance for Aleppo as he shot.

Will this trigger a new diplomatic fallout? Does it prove that Erdogan needs a national enemy like Russia to unify his country in the end? Less things like this happen.

That's one way to look at it. This New York Times article implies that he died while challenging Turkish special forces with the weapon he used to kill the ambassador. Seems reasonable enough for them to have shot the maniac (who obviously had a death wish, suicide by cop).

My theory is that it was done by some remaining rogue military that survived that failed coup aftermath. It was somebody who wants Erdogan gone, and wants Russians to do the actual work of removing him. Could be US, could be Israel, hell, could be even Gulf states (although clandestine ops like that are way beyond their capacity, so I doubt its one of them,).

It's a bit early to be ascribing motives to the shooter, isn't it? Especially with all the potential actors you just listed. This seems more like a jihadi than a foreign-backed operative, considering his seemingly suicidal desire for martyrdom. Or he could have just been a fervent Turkish nationalist. Russia and Turkey aren't exactly best of pals lately considering the lines they've drawn in the sand over Syria.

You beat me to it. I was wondering about the security detail. However, even if this guy was in the detail he would have been shot by someone else in the detail before he could get so many shots off. Instead, he prances around making declarations.
