Default problems with names in [descr_strat]

I've checked my name entries in names.txt, descr_names.txt AND descr_names_lookup.txt, made sure all names match and aren't misspelt, made sure file_first is 1 in the config, made sure my ages and orders of family (hus, wife, kids in age order descending) and NOTHING will get my names to show in game. Everyone's name just comes up blank, including people for whom the error doesn't appear in the log. If I take out everyone in the tree but Tywin (his is the only family tree I'm trying to create right now, every other faction only has a leader while I work this out), then the logfile generates no errors but no names appear still. Help please?

Looks like domino effect caused by inconsistent use of surnames in the family tree. That is if the names and surnames are in the correct section in descr_names and present in text\names.

The character is present in descr_strat either as character entry (general, princess) or character_record (dead, under age, wife) and then in the relative lines. If the name\surname combinations don't tally then you end up with 'record not found' errors.

If you still have problems then upload descr_names.txt, text\names.txt and descr_strat.txt - the lookup file is not required, it's a leftover from RTW.

I can't see any problems between the records and general/princess entries, all 3 files are attached for your perusal. Afaik there should be no conflicts and my brain is close to exploding trying to get what I'm doing wrong.

The problem seems to be the missing end in the Kevan Lannister line, also change the sequence of the 'relative' section as in my sample.

    Code:
relative Tytos Lannister, Jeyne Marbrand, Tywin Lannister, Kevan Lannister, end
relative Tywin Lannister, Joanna Lannister, Jaime Lannister, Tyrion Lannister, end
relative Kevan Lannister, Dorna Swyft, end
relative Jaime Lannister, Cersei Lannister, end
I don't follow the lore closely : is Jamie married to Cersei? I thought she was his (incestuous) sister?

It's to put her in as his sister, as she as a character will actually be a member of another faction (the Crownlands), and the game hasn't been accommodating towards incest

Well, they are going to have children in the game...

They have children in the lore :p Regardless of that I'm still encountering the exact same errors in the same order. Deleted the names string bin, even the rwm for the map just in case, but still no names showing up. This is beginning to get slightly frustrating.

Did you make the changes manually or did you copy the code? Because copying does not preserve the TAB settings.

At the end of that line you simply add a comma after Dorna Swyft and then a TAB followed by end

Yeah I always type out instead of copying for that reason. Only one tab between each phrase in the exact order :S

I just tried to convert your names.txt file to string - only to find out that I can't because it is in ANSI format instead of USC-BOM.

    Try this file now.

Tip: when working on TXT files in the text folder never use 'save as' as that is the main reason of converting the format. Simply 'save'. And delete the corresponding string.bin file to make sure changes do register.

    Totally true !

Btw, is it possible that the game mixes up things : I have a character called Tristan Kendrick and another one called Kendrick Selkirk ... But the log says Tristan Kendrick is not found in the character records, despite him being the fation leader !

You apparently have the first name also as surname - not a good idea. Don't tempt the game to mess up

Are all entries of this character consistent (first name AND surname)? Is the spelling correct in all cases? Is this the only error of this nature? Do the names exist in the correct section in descr_names and are they entered in text\names?

Yep, checked too many times to be my misspelling or things like that. I just don't understand where it comes from. Never tried to delete the first name ... Should I ? Because the surname is more important than the first name. I have only 1 Kendrick Selkirk but a complete Kendrick family !

To over come issues like this I would suggest to use this system:

    first name slot:
    {kendrick_first}Kendrick

    surname slot
    {kendrick_last}Kendrick

The terms in brackets are then used in descr_names and descr_strat and the display will be identical. I am just not sure if that will fix the actual issue, if not then provide the usual files (descr_names, text\names.TXT, descr_strat) and I'll have a look.
