    Default New rig issues

    Ok, here goes nothing...

I've bought parts for a new computer. The parts are:
Intel Core Duo 2 E6300 boxed
    2 X 512 Corsair CM2X512 6400C4
    Galaxy 7300 GT 128 DDR3 RAM
    Western Digital HDD 250 GB
A 430 W power supply, compliant with ATX 12 V version 2.0 standard (that the motherboard requires)

I also connected a CD reader, keyboard and mouse. Now onto the strange stuff...

When turning the power on with both memory modules installed the system does not boot. It does not beep, the screen is black. The motherboard is lit up, all connections checked, all fans working.

When removing a memory stick the system powers up and boots up. It is incredibly instable and hangs up on any attempt to launch a Linux Live CD or to install Windowze.

Any ideas why it happends? Eagerly awaiting replies...

are u sure u installed the ram modules corectly ?
does ur mainboard support that kind of ram ?
the 2 memory dimms might be damaged
whats ur mainboard ? the no beep suggests a sytem board or power supply problem
a not branded power supply can produce less then the specified number of watts, that value being the best it can provide under the best circumstances

Reseating the memory modules often works; simply remove and replace them. If multiple modules are installed, you can also try switching their places on the motherboard. Put module 1 in slot 2, and module 2 in slot 1.

I am stupid... the motherboard is a Asus P5B. The power supply is SirTec and certified 450 W and compliant with ATX 12 V v 2.0...

I have narrowed it down to the memory or the motherboard... If there's more that anybody knows...

PS: Pentru ca pot sa pun una mai buna mai incolo...

You said you've narrowed it down to the memory or motherboard, how did you do that? Did you test the other parts in another machine? I think this is the third time I've said this today (so maybe im a little biased :-), but it sounds to me like your PSU. It might be that your PSU can't handle two sticks of memory so it won't do anything. And then when you remove the second stick it has just enough power to try booting, but can't handle the workload of installing. I don't know the name SirTec, but then again you're in Europe right? We have different PSU standards in America. It might be that the power supply doesn't have enough amperage on one of the lines, or it may just have a faulty part. Its worth looking into at least, do you have another PSU to check with?

    It's not his PSU.

Well, I presented the problem to Corsair and they said to return the memories... So I guess this covers it. And be warned all you thinking of getting a Asus P5B whatever version. They have several serious issues with memory and cause real headaches...

check if the cpu is well placed, it could also be the memories, try each of it at the time, and then maybe try them on another pc , my brother also has that motherboard and he has lots of compatibilty problems with memories.

Try memtesting the ram dims in an older computer if possible.

    I'd echo this one.

I had an identical issue and found that both my memory AND motherboard were screwed.

Basically, I took the rig I built for my girlfriend and swapped parts back and forth. Found that the PC booted with her memory and not mine. Using her RAM I installed WindowsXP successfully, then swapped it out with my RAM and ran memtest. Failed immediately and errors were stacking up rapidly. I RMA'ed my RAM but experienced random and somewhat frequent crashes... something else was up. After testing just about everything else (only suspects left were mobo, CPU, and PSU), I took a gamble and bought an Asus A8N-E to replace my Abit AN8-SLI. It's been smooth as butter ever since. I'm guessing I might've damaged the board by both working on the carpet and not grounding myself when installing a harddrive.

Is the Asus P5B really that bad? Would you recommend me against ordering this bundle which includes one as the site actually guarantees that bundled packaging will run well with the other parts provided.

The Asus P5B is one of the best motherboard for overclocking Core 2 Duos. Those parts looks pretty good. Not sure about the price though.

Well, the board gets reving reviews... But it seems like it has its share of compatibility issues with memory. And also there have been a few faulty ones shiped, according to a hardaware salesman friend of mine.

I got my Corsair sent back. 10 working days till the new ones. Ufffff.... but meanwhile I plan to test the motherboard thoroughly to be sure I do not need to send it back too...
