Default US Ballot Results for Marijuana, Death Penalty, Minimum Wages, Gun Control, etc.

California, Nevada and Massachusetts vote to legalize recreational marijuana: How Americans voted on a range of ballot initiatives around the country

This Guardian article by Sam Levin sums it all up pretty nicely. In sum, California, Nevada, and Massachusetts voted to legalize recreational marijuana while Florida, North Dakota, and Arkansas voted to allow medical marijuana. Montana voted to expand its medical marijuana program, and Arizona rejected medical marijuana (lol, Arizona, you so funny). As some may already know, medical marijuana ballots were already passed in Colorado, Washington, Oregon, and Alaska during previous elections.

The ballot to outlaw the death penalty in California was defeated. Meanwhile, Oklahoma voted to retain capital punishment and Nebraskan voters chose to reinstate it.

Maine, Colorado, Washington, and Arizona voted to raise the minimum wage for workers in their states, while South Dakota rejected it. Two different climate change related ballots failed in Washington and Florida. Colorado rejected a single-payer healthcare system for the state and California rejected a ballot measure on limiting spending for prescription drugs. Washington, California, and Nevada all passed ballots to further restrict certain gun rights (such as making stricter background checks), while Maine voters rejected a gun control ballot.

You can read the other results in the article. It's fascinating! What do you guys think of all of these? How much of a role did special interests and corporate-funded advertisements play in swaying voters' decisions for each of these ballot measures? The pharmaceutical companies are obviously going to be happy about the ballot in California about prescription drugs, but the legalization of marijuana in several states will continue to rival their products in terms of offering effective and affordable pain relief for people with various ailments.

As a US citizen, what is your personal opinion about each of these ballot measures? If you're not a US citizen, then you must stop reading and kindly leave the thread and go back to whatever commie country you came from, Sven! Clearly this is for Muricans only.

    Just kidding, everyone's welcome.

They all seem about right. Shame about the excitment over the death penalty. Thought we were past those times.

All in all not too terribly upset. Would have to do a lot of research to see who is actually pushing this .

My favorite ballot referendum was not mentioned: vote ranking in Maine. If it proliferates, I think the argument "third parties are a wasted vote" will finally die

Fascinating. Thanks for bringing it up! I'm all in favor of Johnson and Stein, or rather the Libertarian and Green parties, getting a lot more recognition.

Sounds good to me, except for the gun restrictions. Also you forgot to mention the failed referendum to mandate condom use in California porn.

Lol. "ing California" as John McClane once said in Die Hard.

I'm with you on the gun control thing. It wasn't some outright ban in these cases, though. Otherwise you'd have another million-man march, this time with gun owners.

wait why did ultra liberal California keep death penalty? You'd think they'd be absolutely against it?

Same question here. To be honest, it somehow irritates me how People vote both FOR Marijuana and FOR capital punishment.
I would have thought, those might be totally different audiences?

Minorities are not ultra liberal, just democrat voters.

Looks like minorities vote Democrats only out of immigration laws and handouts then, for the rest they have very different values.

Let California secede and see the minorities march on those smug Hollywood and Silicon Valley for a much ruder awakening than Trump's victory.

What is the point of separate states having different marijuana laws?

I mean, it would make sense in a nationwide level, either legal or illegal, but just making people travel a few miles to cross an imaginary line within the same country and then it's suddenly okay?

Someone from Arizona that would have health benefits from marijuana now has to arrange a meeting at the state border to smoke there and then go back home?

What if the air blows towards Arizona at that point?
It is no measure of health to be well adjusted to a profoundly sick society.

States rights is a big part of our system. Its both good and bad, but for things which are not federal it allows states to make laws that may make sense for them locally even if it doesn't make sense somewhere else.

Because only State Gov. care about it right now. It could be an important revenue source for them. As for why Uncle Sam doesn't make up its mind about it, its because its not on the national agenda. In a world where Washington politics are intrinsically tied to healthcare reform(at the moment)... there's really no intellectual space for marijuana laws.

I like the application of direct democracy there with voters voting on a number of issues aside of the top guy.
