    Default Medieval Kingdoms Total War: Republic of Venice (WIP)

    '

    The city of canals is a reminder that starting from a great defensive position is an ideal foundation upon which to build an empire. With the city itself perched on the Ri'Alto island and the Venetian Lagoon serving as a massive moat for the city, Venice is a natural fortress. Although the Venetians do not boast a noteworthy land army, they are the leading seafarers of the time. this gives them the ability to confidently defend their capital from direct attack, as well as establish trade routes more readily than most any other major power.

    A century earlier the Venetians were plagued by Dalmatian pirates who preyed upon the merchants that plied their lucrative sea trade throughout the Adriatic. Through clever diplomacy, Pietro Orseolo, "Doge" of the Venetian Republic was able to isolate the marauding pirate Slavs into small, manageable groups that he then forced to surrender. This opened the door for Venice to evolve from an isolated trading city into a European power in its own right.

    With their ability to dominate trade and traverse the Mediterranean, so long as the Venetians diligently protect their island city, they will always remain a force to be reckoned with.

    Nice work The_Culverin.

    one small point: The Barbute type of helmet (which you've used for high spear serjeants) is actually a late period equipment, since it entered the scene in 15th century.

    I'm putting that Barbute variant in there as a placeholder until a more tier 2 type of that helmet, being made by sly, is completed.

    It's more of a game problem than a texture problem, from the fact that the flag model can't wave. I'm sure something can be done to make it wave, but it would take a long while for that to happen.

    This guy may have chosen the wrong coat of arms for his job position. Or.. he is very brave.

    Nice work, but don't forget the Peak Bascinets!

    ~Wille
    Thorolf was thus armed. Then Thorolf became so furious that he cast his shield on his back, and, grasping his halberd with both hands, bounded forward dealing cut and thrust on either side. Men sprang away from him both ways, but he slew many. Thus he cleared the way forward to earl Hring's standard, and then nothing could stop him. He slew the man who bore the earl's standard, and cut down the standard-pole. After that he lunged with his halberd at the earl's breast, driving it right through mail and body, so that it came out at the shoulders; and he lifted him up on the halberd over his head, and planted the butt-end in the ground. There on the weapon the earl breathed out his life in sight of all, both friends and foes. [...] 53, Egil's Saga
    I must tell you here of some amusing tricks the Comte d'Eu played on us. I had made a sort of house for myself in which my knights and I used to eat, sitting so as to get the light from the door, which, as it happened, faced the Comte d'Eu's quarters. The count, who was a very ingenious fellow, had rigged up a miniature ballistic machine with which he could throw stones into my tent. He would watch us as we were having our meal, adjust his machine to suit the length of our table, and then let fly at us, breaking our pots and glasses.

    Anything that keeps the Doge safe... imagine the bravery, when he's not even part of the bodyguards

    Very nice Venetians.
    I don't like the unit name stule though, either go italian or english not a fake non-authentic mix.

    thank you very much, italian names can be a submod though, so they match other units, but then not spear milizia but spear militia and so on. But I hope all gets native anyways

    I was actually working on such a submod, but progress was halted because of me joining the team and my general frustration on Google Translate for being unable to translate words in some languages (cant translate spearmen into Armenian for example). I have more than a few changed in my notes if anybody is willing to pick it up though.

    Venezia Berrovieri= Berrovieri veneziani;
    Venezia Lungo-Lanciere= Lungo-lancieri veneziani (or Picchieri veneziani);
    Venezia Piede-Cavaliere= Cavalieri a piedi veneziani;
    Venezia Cavaliere= Cavalieri veneziani;
    Venezia Cavaliere Berrovieri= Berrovieri a cavallo veneziani;

    Venezia Balestriere= Balestrieri veneziani;
    Venezia Arcieri= Arcieri veneziani;
    Venezia Pesante Fanteria= Fanteria pesante veneziana; Venezia Montato Balestriere= Balestrieri montati venezianiani.

    Yeah, it should be pretty much like this
    Lancia Milizia = Lancieri Miliziani, or, if you go with an "old italic" feel, Lanciari Militiani/Lanciari della Milizia. Lancia Sergente should be Sergenti Lanciarii, or Sergenti con lancia.
    Venezia Spadaccini/Berrovieri/Lungo lancieri should all become Spadaccini/Berrovieri/Picchieri Veneziani, di Venezia, or "de Venezia".
    Piede-Cavaliere should translate as "Cavalieri appiedati di Venezia/Cavalieri appiedati Veneziani". Venezia Cavaliere Berrovieri should be named to "Berrovieri a cavallo Veneziani"

    Not to sound presumptuous or anything, just because, the way it is, these names don't make sense in Italian, I fear

    BTW, these units are just stunning. This is truly a quality work.

    Or just go with a hybrid English and Italian mix like I have set up with the Norse factions.

    I plan on changing the names without Venezia to the more Italian variants given to me, but I plan on keeping (or just slightly changing) the names with Venezia in the title to what they are now currently, to keep it more simple and better flowing for non Italian speakers to read.

    The hybrid english-native-mix like Slytacular did for norse factions is perfect; simple to read for non-english speakers, immersive, unique and it shows the unit functions clearly though.
    This should be used uniformly for all factions.

    I strongly disagree. It could maybe work for Romance and Germanic languages but English-Slavic mish-mash almost always sounds terrible.
