Default could there be a pattern with SOME total war fans forming???

The first total war game I had was mtw1, I bought it a little over 2 years ago.

I immediately fell in love with it. And played it night and day for months.

Then about 5 months later I discovered there was a game called "rome total war"... and being total war, not only was good, but it had 3d graphics which made me buy it right away.

Played that straight for a month or two and was in love with that as well.

Then I went back to mtw1 for a while, and found that I loved it just as much as rtw, which was strange to me, because rtw was 3d, and mtw1 was only two dimensional.

Now I have been playing mtw2 since november 14th, and I absolutely love it.

But something in me craves to try RTW again... I have no clue why.
( I am installing it right now lol)

Has this happened to anyone else??

By the way, what is the latest rome mod to come out? Has EB released a 1.5 version yet?

Your not the only one, I even sometimes still play Shogun total war, trying to finish a campaign as Oda with peasent army's and ninja's.
Had some very tough fights against those bastards of a Mori with their bloody "Don't you dare hit me" monks.

Indeed, but the reason I (just then) reinstalled RTW was for EB 0.8...and because I find Roman history so much more interesting and inspiring than Medieval history.

To me Europe at the time of RTW is a sandbox that I feel free to do in what I will, (Venture forth into the wilderness, civilise the wild lands...), while Medieval Europe was much more structured, each kingdom was established, and thanks to the Pope, had to more or less look at each other as equals.

To put it blunt M2TW compels me to play in a certain way that, while I do find enjoyable, just doesn't capture my imagination as the Roman times do.

(I think it's because that while Rome actually spanned the while continent (more or less), no power during medieval times did, powers grew large enough to influence the whole continent, but they never actually ruled it....except through diplomacy from time to time...which M2TW cannot simulate, as the AI factions are playing to win, and not to survive).

I started a topic in this thread about how the mtw2 units do not inspire me as much as the rome total war units did.

Amazingly most agreed that rtw had more of a inspiring feel to it. Some however did say they feel more inspired by knights than by legionaries, or spartans and barbarians.

Not me. I sold my copy of RTW gold a month ago for the price I *bought* it at... bye bye.

I did have to mod the victory conditions significantly in M2TW to make it seem playable though. I too think taking over all of Europe is ridiculous for a goal...

But, usually, I move on and don't look back...

I have done this to actually. I simply got tired of the player being kinda forced to play a certain way. As someone said, all nations are established and the pope always holds you on a short leash. And if you don't want to listen to the pope, you will end up with everyone crusading your cities. Not good for people as me that likes to enjoy a time of peace and prosperity while taking a province here and there.

In Rome... it was just another feel to it! As Rome you could civilise the barbarians, pillage the greeks and all that. I have actually installer Rome and RTR recently again. Altough i havent had time to play it yet, i do look forward to it more than i want to play M2TW right now.

You know, if you guys would pay the pope some indulgence monies every once and awhile to keep yourself up in the good ratings, you'd find that when he demands you cease attacking your neighbors and even threatens excommunication, it simply lowers your reputation with him from 10, 9 or 8 points to 9, 8, 7 or 6.

I find the most inspiring Rome mod to be SPQR, that is if you want to be the romans. It is the perfect simulation of rome, and if you play by the house rules, the game feels like history. What with the named legions, and mostly full stack vs full stack battles, I just love watching those imperial legionaries marching across gaul...

The republican legionaries are the ones in chainmail, and I usually just use auxiliaries until the imperial legionaries (with segmenta armour) are available. They look SOOO much better than the vanilla ones... I mean... they look real. With the sun glistening on their armour as they tramp across europe..

That did not happen to me. It happened as i said many times, even if i paid the pope so much money he could wipe his arse with silk every day. But it have become apparent that every campaign is different from the other so whatever.

Anyways, i'm going to try EB now for the first time ever and see if it is indeed better than RTR. But first, i think i am actually going to play a campaign with patched vanilla. I haven't played vanilla Rome in a very long time.

I too have reverted back to RTW - tried ME2 after the patch, still left me cold and disinterested after a few hours of play, so started a new Scippii (sp?) campaign, been hooked again ever since!
I think that there may be more people interested in the Roman period than Medieval - the latter certainly isn't a bad game by any stretch, but I have found it dull (for want of a better word), to the more dynamic RTW. But, I do like the period better - am sure if I preferred Medieval history, the boot would perhaps be on the other foot! Horses for courses, I guess.........

Yes, that's so exactly. Depends on what era you like. Middle Ages is rather poorly represented in this game (aside of battles) but it was not dull at all.
Macedons, eastern, seleucids, for me every faction was appealing except numids) and romans...In vanilla RTW playing with romans was nearly a cheat.
And spreading roman culture never interested me. Rather creating a half-barbarian empire with intermarriage between romans and barbarians
    Now that was novelty!

One of the overwhelming factors that RTW has going for it is that you're EXPECTED to go out and bring the world to heel. In Medieval you're not (as others have said). However the diplomacy is being improved upon all the time, and well compared to RTW, M2TW graphics are just sweeeet, which has a lot (but not everything) to do with why I'm playing it. I don't really see how cosmopolitan medieval europe can fit a TW game. For me it will always be Rome that started it all. "I came, I saw, I conquered!" from Gaul to Britain to North Africa to the Nile to Persia. There has been "no shore that has not seen our blood". This is what Total War means to me. The "feel" of an old but veteran general commanding yet another Roman Legion on yet another faraway shore... just to do it... again...

Had almost the same feeling Metellus although I picked the sides to finally defeat the romans. I don't know how many times i played as Carthage, Gaul or Greece(although half the time I had to kill off some others because they didn't see things my way )

The thing I really liked in rome where the intro movies, what a way to set up a certain faction feeling. I really enjoyed the one of Carthage.

No. I would assume most play historical games to play a historical faction and play out "what if" scenarios, not recreate history. I may be wrong, but if I want to recreate history a good book does a much better job.
That is perhaps why they call it "recreation"

What if scenarios only work for me if they have some reality..conquering the world as Venice is an example to a bad 'what if' scenario.
A good what if scenario somewhat stick to history, which is nearly impossible in the given state of MTW2 map and all.
I prefer the Venice conquering the world scenario. It's an extreme what if that would be fun to play out. I guess to each his own.
