Lucius Aelius Sejanus arrives at Tappulus' praetorium dressed in the garb of the prefect of the vigiles and saluted. "Hail, Consul. I have come to serve in the Gallic campaign."
Consul Tappulus welcomes Sejanus into his personal quarters and gives him a slight nod, looking up from maps of Gaul.
"Ave, Sejanus, you are more than welcome to serve Rome in this campaign north. By the looks of you, you have served in the Vigiles, correct? Tell me a bit about yourself."
Standing at attention, the man began to give a brief history of himself. "I am from a humble background, but was advanced in my career into municipal offices by Gaius Furius Sulpicianus before his untimely death. Last year I was appointed prefect of the vigiles in the city, and was set in charge of organizing them. I have completed this task and I look for a new challenge." and to stop being the errand boy of a dangerous man.
Tappulus smiled. The man seemed like a good and honest man with the right kind of vigor to lead men into battle.
"Then you are welcome to join us as soon as the legions are ready to march north, Tribune Sejanus. We will need all the experience we can get, since we will get the newest recruits while Consul Sulla takes his experienced troops East to Macedon and Asia. Then again, I doubt that we will have too much trouble with the barbaric Gauls."
"The Gauls are an ancient enemy, as long as we keep discipline I do not think we can lose. But still, green recruits may lose their nerve in the face of their tactics. I hear they dye themselves blue and sometimes go into battle naked." Sejanus said "Impractical, but scary."
"Fear is a powerful force on the battlefield, though a double-edged sword. A scared animal will either flee for its life or fight until its death. However, I have no need for animals in this army, but trained and true soldiers of Rome. We will need to instill discipline and order into them, and once they've been bloodied in battle we will have a truly capable force at our command."
Consul Tappulus looked over the map of Gaul once more. Wilderness and unknown terrain, with ambushes ready around every corner. It was not ideal by far, but one could never expect to always be on top in politics or war.
"As for the Gauls, it is currently the tribe known as Aedui that has invaded the province. We have at the very least non-hostile relations with many other tribes. If we can beat this invasion force, then we could persuade other tribes to join our side and crush King Dumnorix."

"It seems a good plan, Consul. Once we rendezvous with the Pro-Consul, we can put it into action. If I may be so bold, I would serve as Tribunus Militum of the 12th Legion." Sejanus replied.
This legion is transferred to Tappulus
Legio XI Gemina
Quintus Fabius Ambustus, the younger brother of the current Praetor Marcus, arrives at Tappulus' camp.
"Consul," he begins once led in. "I come to offer my services in this coming campaign; I desire to be of use to your forces."
"If that is your wish, I do not see a problem with it. The 12th legion is my personal legion and will lead the charge, so you would serve directly under me, Tribune Sejanus."
Tappulus offers the man a drink of wine and to take a place beside him, so that they could go over the initial strategy.
----
Ambustus is welcomed as well by the consul.
"More good men eager to do their duty for Rome, that is the kind of spirit that we need. You are of course welcome to join us, but do you have any military experience to speak of?"
"I served a little in the Social War, consul. Nothing on this scale, though."
He had not contemplated the issue of experience, but it mattered little, he would gain it in this conflict; he was sure.
"That is good, men of character and with experience is always welcome. You are hereby appointed Military Tribune of the 13th legion. I expect that you will get the troops in order, since most of them are fresh recruits and will need a steady hand to get them in line. Any further questions?"
"None at all, Consul." He responds, offering a smile at the appointment. Should he be dismissed he would leave soon after to take his post.
A while later, a young man enters the quarters of Consul Tappulus. Surprised by this unexpected meeting, Tappulus looks up from his documents only to find his son Marcus standing in front of him. The young man was tanned and his hair glistened from his time spent in Africa.
"Marcus? What are you doing here? I thought you were with Senator Milo, aiding him as his client."
Marcus shrugged.
"Hello to you too, father, I hope that you have been well. I just returned from Africa, and this is the welcome I get from my own father? Though I guess I can't be too surprised, with all the important consul matters you have to attend to."
Lucius sighed and went over to hug his son. None of them were in the mood for bickering with each other. They both smiled
"You look well, the provinces seem to have done you much good. Indeed, I should have been there to meet you when you came back, but as you can see it has been rather hectic. You have probably heard that the sky is falling down upon us, and now I have to lead four legions to defeat the invading barbarians."
"Hard to miss when there are a sea of legionaries camped here on Campus Martius. Though from what I've heard, Consul Sulla is the one who is really in charge and not you. Several well-known senators have already volunteered to lead his legions, while you get the scraps. No offense, of course. But that is why I am here, for I wish to serve as a tribune under you, father. With Publius off in Asia chasing pirates, I thought that I could contribute to the family closer to home. You know, earn a few military honors, become a senator, for the family."
The consul smiled at his sons words, yet he had many worried thoughts underneath. Sulla was the real power in Rome now, and it would benefit the Villii Tappuli to get on his good graces at the moment. However, Lucius did not doubt that such a man would have more enemies than friends one day, and then he would have to make a decision. For now though, it was best to dance to the co-consul's tune.
"Consul Sulla is my senior when it comes to military matters, son. He has been granted a triumph for his victories in Hispania, so it is only logical that I listen to his suggestions and take them to heart. Since he is also going to face the might of Pontus in the east, he will need many more legions than I. I doubt that the Gauls will be a match for four legions of Rome, no matter how green they are. As for you Marcus, you are more than welcome to join us as we march north. Get all of your equipment and weapons ready, you are hereby appointed to Military Tribune of the 14th legion. Make me proud, son."
Marcus made a salute to his father and left the quarters to get everything ready.
Sextus Adustus arrived to speak to Tappulus.
Sextus Adustus is welcomed into the consul's tent. He is offered some wine.
"Sextus Adustus, welcome, how are you? It was such a tragedy what happened to your family, I offered a prayer to the gods so that they may find their way in the Afterlife. Your father was a good man and did not deserve such a gruesome death, nor did the rest of your family."
Sextus winced a little at the nickname. Hardly a man's nickname of choice. Even Carnifex was better - at least the connotations were those of strength and power. "My thanks, Consul. I have come here today to wish you luck in your campaigns. I will offer a prayer for your safety. I would also like to offer my son as a personal assistant. As my successor, he must serve well."
"Thank you for your kind words, I am sure the gods will hear them and bring us victory as we go to defend Rome from the barbarians. As for your son, he is more than welcome to join us as we go north. Young Gnaeus, if my memory serves me right?"
